2006118515In english. Soft cover 24 cm 318 pp. A selection of studies intending to investigate the genesis of values in Greek antiquity and to follow their development throughout their historical evolution up to their present aspect. Are values independent from platonic ideas or are they ideas and values altogether claiming their proper fulfillment The question leads to a problematic that surpasses a mere alterative to join the exploration of the real status of values according to their emergence. BY rejecting all types of subjectivisms and objectivisms the Author adopts a solution which favours the process of an objectification of values: being projected on a field of objectivity they exert a kind of autonomous irradiation on hypon consciousness which in its turn is attracted by them. What results from this mutual activity is a genuine tendency towards directly experiencing various axiological categories respectively related to the True the Beautiful and the Good. From the dust jacket: "Christian Thomasius 1655-1728 was a tireless campaigner against the political enforcement of religion in the early modern confessional state. In a whole series of combative disputations - against heresy and witchcraft prosecutions and in favour of religious toleration - Thomasius battled to lay the intellectual groundwork for the separation of church and state and the juridical basis for pluralistic societies. In this text Ian Hunter departs from the usual view of Thomasius as a natural law moral philosopher. In addition to investigating his anti-scholastic cultural politics Hunter discusses Thomasius' work in public and church law particularly his disputations arguing for the toleration of heretics providing a revealing comparison with Locke's arguments on the same topic. If Locke sought to base toleration in the subjective rights protecting Christian citizens against an intolerant state Thomasius grounded it in the state's duty to impose toleration as an obligation on intolerant citizens.". Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis the Church-Turing Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. Church was first to demonstrate that David Hilbert's Entscheidungsproblem was unsolvable. It was Church who coined the phrase "Turing machine" for Alan Turing's hypothetical universal computing machine. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century.
