Quelques usures, manque sur les pièces de titre et tomaison. Tome cinquante-unieme des œuvres de Voltaire correspondant au tome cinq du dictionnaire philosophique de « empoisonneu » à « gazette ». Il contient les articles « esclave, esprit, état : quel est le meilleur ?, eternité, évangile, fanatisme : en cinq sections, femme, foie ». Tome seul contenant l’article « fanatisme » un des textes les plus fameux de Voltaire. « Fanatisme : c’est l’effet d’une fausse conscience, qi a servi la religion, aux caprices de l’imagination et aux dérèglements des passions. (…) Il est affreux de voir comment l’opinion d’apaiser le ciel par le massacre, une fois introduite, c’est universellement répandue dans presque toutes les religions ; et combien en a multiplié les raisons de ce sacrifice, afin que personne ne pût échapper au couteau. »

Der berühmte Schweizer Publizist, Philosoph und Historiker, Jacques Mallet du Pan, wurde 1749 in Genf geboren und starb 1800 im englischen Richmond. Seine "Considérations sur la nature de la révolution francaise" erschienen in London 1793. Bei der Übersetzung handelt es sich um ein Frühwerk von Gentz, der sich von einem begeisterten Anhänger der französischen Revolution zu einem ihrer entschiedensten Gegner wandelte. Die erste Lage mit einem unschönen Braunfleck oben links, sonst nur minimal gebräuntes, stellenweise gering stockfleckiges Exemplar dieser äußerst seltenen.Vgl. Goedeke VI, 191, 3 und Fromm 16009. Spines and some corners lightly and expertly restored, barely noteable. Occasional very light brownspotting or dusting, but overall very nice and clean. Printed on good, heavy paper, with wide margins. An excellent copy. (2), VIII, (2), 466, (6) pp. + (4), 407, (1) pp. + (4), 384 pp." (4), 455, (1) pp. + 5 engraved plates (used as frontispieces and facing p. (141) of vol. 1 respectively). The first plate ""Thétis"" in the variant state without title (as described in MacEachern). Fully complete, exactly as described in MacEachern. With all the misprints: Vol. 1: 88 as S8, 443 as 433, 465 as 46" vol. 2: 356 as 256, 357 as 257 vol. 3: 383 as 363 vol. 4: 336 with first 3 broken (according to McEachern this is just the case in some copies). With the usual cancelled leaves: Vol 1: Av + B4" vol. 2: H3 + N6 (called I6). The final leaf ends with ""FIN"" and has no grapes (MacEachern: ""The grapes appear in three different forms..."").
