Fiske a 19th century American historian and philosopher was asked by Ginn & Co. Boston to abridge Irving's classic five volume biography of George Washington for use as a school textbook. First Printing First Edition. 618 pages in green boards with black lettering and "classical" design on front cover 5 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches illustrated with maps and including a glossary and index. Two pages of publisher's ads. Boards' corners and spine ends lightly bumped spine ends show wear but no tearing or chipping. Text edges moderately soiled; previous owner's name and date 1895 in pencil at top of title page. The name - "Seth Warner" an associate of Ethan Allen and an officer in Allen's Green Mountain Boys - lightly underlined on page 153 o/w boards and text are clean complete and unmarked; binding is tight hinges intact. Text block tight and quite nice though original boards quite edgeworn and age toned; inner hinges with old paper spine mend thus tight; calf spine of later vintage with title in gilt. A tight and nice first volume only of the scarce first U.S. edition of this influential economic treatise -- but a fine and unique association copy: Front flyleaf and title page each bear the bold ownership signature of Lewis W. Green 1806-63 a notable Presbyterian minister and educator whose college presidencies include Hampden-Sydney College 9th president 1848-56 Transylvania University 8th president 1856-58 and Centre College 4th president 1858-63. Green entered Centre College Kentucky at the young age of 16 in 1822 -- the very year he signed the title page of this volume adding proudly "Centre College April 1822" beneath. Front flyleaf signature appears to have been added much later. Green appears to have had this copy specially bound instructing the binder to insert a blank leaf after every two text leaves so that he could fill them with his pencilled notes. Many leaves are blank but many others are filled with his neatly pencilled scholarly jottings discussing Say's text -- clearly Green spent much time reading and analyzing this copy. Although this is volume one only of this two-volume set it is an absolutely intriguing and obviously one-of-a-kind copy worthy of further research. Wells and Lilly hardcover

Charles Francis Saunders 1859-1941 Was Born To Quaker Parents In Bucks County Pennsylvania. He And His First Wife Elisabeth Hallowell Saunders D. 1910 Were Both Avid Naturalists; Charles Began Publishing Essays On Botany As Early As The 1890S. Charles And Elisabeth Also Collaborated On A Number Of Publications He As Author She As Illustrator. After A Honeymoon Trip To California And The Southwest In 1902 The Couple Moved Permanently To California In 1906 And Settled In A Craftsman Bungalow On North Lake Avenue In Pasadena Where Charles Devoted Himself Full Time To Writing. He Eventually Published More Than A Dozen Books Inspired By California And The Southwest. Both Charles And Elisabeth Were Amateur Photographers And Many Of Their Photographs Were Used To Illustrate Saunders' Books The Indians Of The Terraced Houses 1912 And Under The Sky In California 1913. In 1921 Saunders Married Mira Barrett Culin D. 1968 Whom He Had Met At The Pasadena Garden Club. Also A Writer Mira Shared Saunders' Interest In Gardens Botany And Photography. For Many Years Mira Published Articles On Pasadena Gardens Parks And Trees In The Pasadena Star News For Which She Took Dozens Of Photographs. First With Elisabeth And Then With Mira Saunders Travelled Extensively Throughout California And The Southwest Photographing All Of The California Missions The Regions' Natural Wonders Native Americans And Flora Among Other Things. These Interests Became The Subjects Of 18 Books And Numerous Essays And Articles Saunders Published In His Lifetime. Many Of These Books Were Illustrated With Photographs Taken By Their Author On His Many Excursions. Saunders' Collection Of Native American Pottery And Crafts Is Now In The Collection Of The Southwest Museum Los Angeles And His Botanic Library Is In The Possession Of The Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens.
