Ownership stamp of Edward T. Pierce 1851-1919 Superintendent of the Pasadena school system from 1883 - 1889. In 1889 he was elected as first Principal of Chico Normal School where he served 4 years. In his autobiography he said "I felt then and still feel that God can give no man or woman any higher or more exalted work than that of training teachers.". As first principal he chose the faculty began recruiting students and planned the curriculum for the normal school. He started the model training school in 1890. The plain unadorned covers have some wear at the edges but all leather is intact hinges are starting innerboards and endpapers have browned edges foxing wear and soil. Inside a frontispiece depicts the author holding a copy of this volume. This is an apparent first edition but the lineage is somewhat unclear as a later edition 1848 was declared to be a first as well. The book contains essays on issues of morality civic duty and so on including a "miniature" biography of George Washington and documents such as the Declaration of Independence etc. 272 pages plus 48-page index; approx. 5"x8".
