Dated 1882. Apart from the wear to corners and spine a very tidy copy some pencil notes to rear fep only 550pp large heavy 8vo. Dr Millen Coughtrey 1848 - 1908 Anatomy Professor and St Clairs medical practioneer born in Lancashire and graduated as a doctor from Edinburgh University in 1871. In 1875 he was selected as the foundation professor of anatomy at Otago University. Donald MacNaughton Stuart 1819-94. Presbyterian minister born on 5 February 1819 in Kenmore Parish Perthshire Scotland the son of Alexander Stuart a farmer and of Janet n MacNaughton. He was educated at the parish school and began teaching in order to put himself through St. Andrew's University. In 1843 he was involved in the upset following the Disruption and was one of those who organised the election of Thomas Chalmers the noted Presbyterian divine as Lord Rector of the University. The senate expelled the students concerned but they were soon reinstated by a Royal Commission. He continued his theological studies at New College Edinburgh and in London. The Kelso Presbytery licensed him to preach and about July 1849 he was inducted at Falstone Presbyterian Church North Tyne where he remained for 10 years. In November 1859 Stuart was appointed to the second Knox Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. He arrived at Port Chalmers in the Bosworth on 27 February 1860 and relieved Dr Burns until Knox Church was opened. On 6 May 1860 he was inducted at Knox Church where he remained for the rest of his life. Early in his career Stuart formed a most successful Bible class which he conducted until 1891. During the 1860s he undertook many pastoral journeys through the Otago country districts and became extremely popular among the diggers on the goldfields. association copy. First Edition. 'Recently a great deal of attention has been directed at the Siwan al-Hikmah of Abü Salaimãn as-Sijistani as-Sijazi by some of our most outstanding Orientalists. This growing interest has focused on its importance for the history of Arabic philosophy especially in connection with the Greeks and has been manifested in a corresponding curiousity as to what its contents may be. Franz Ro-senthal has spoken of its crucial importance for Graeco-Arabic studies. Jörg Kraemer who demonstrated in a brilliant fashion that the Homeric citations in the Siwan al-Hikmah were in fact the vapar attributed to Menander has described the text in equally strong terms. However in spite of the fact that a number of good manuscripts of abridged or selected versions exist Muntakhab no complete copy of the original Siwan al-Hikmah is as yet known. The Muntakhab SiwÄn al-Hikmah dates from approximately A. D. 1200 whereas the original is of nearly the same date as the Fihrist of Ibn an-Nadim written in about 377/987 - or perhaps even earlier. Cloonan makes the case that at this critical juncture we must consider preservation in the broadest possible contexts. Preservation requires the efforts of an increasing number of stakeholders.In order to explore the cultural political technological economic and ethical dimensions of preservation Cloonan examines particular monuments and their preservation dilemmas. The massive Bamiyan Buddhas blown up by the Taliban in 2001 are still the subject of debates over how or whether to preserve what remains and the US National Park Service has undertaken the complex task of preserving the symbolic and often ephemeral objects that visitors leave at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial-to take just two of the many examples described in the book. Cloonan also considers the ongoing genocide and cultural genocide in Syria; the challenges of preserving our digital heritage; the dynamic between original and copy; efforts to preserve the papers and architectural fragments of the architect Louis Sullivan; and the possibility of sustainable preservation.
