The front cover to the second volume is nearly detached and now just hanging by one thread. Bernard Mandeville or Bernard de Mandeville 1670 -1733 was an Anglo-Dutch philosopher political economist and satirist. Born in Rotterdam Netherlands he lived most of his life in England and used English for most of his published works. The book was primarily written as a political satire on the state of England in 1705 when the Tories were accusing John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough and the ministry of advocating the War of the Spanish Succession for personal reasons. In 1723 a later edition appeared including An Essay on Charity and Charity Schools and A Search into the Nature of Society. The former essay criticised the charity schools designed to educate the poor and in doing so instil virtue in them. Mandeville disagreed with the idea that education adds virtue because he did not believe that evil desires existed only in the poor but rather he saw the educated and wealthy as much more crafty. Mandeville also believed that educating the poor increased their desires for material things defeating the purpose of the school and making it more difficult to provide for them. Full Leather. Fair. 1859005784Boston: Gould and Lincoln 1859. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Jeremiah Chaplin was a 19th century Reformed Baptist theologian who became the first president of Colby College in Maine in 1817. He returned to his pastorate in Rowley MA in 1833 continuing to preach and to write before a final move to Hamilton NY where he died in 1841. His seven published works were all issued posthumously "The Evening Of Life" being the first in 1851. It is a collection of prayers devotions and religious and philosphical excerpts from numerous authors directed primarily at an older audience. This copy is from the "Revised and Much Enlarged" edition issued by Gould & Lincoln in 1859 a first edition thus and noted as a new edition on the title page. There were also 3 earlier printings by Jewett & Co. Boston in 1854 and 1856. This copy is about 5 x 7 5/8 inches 281 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's ads bound in black paper-covered boards stamped with a geometric design and the Gould & Lincoln symbol. Lettering on spine is in gold. The boards are considerably worn at the edges corners and spine ends with chipping at top of spine cover revealing top edge of binding. The bottom edge of the spine cover is worn through but not yet lost. The boards' surfaces show shelf wear and rubbing. That said the binding itself remains firm with all hinges interior and exterior intact with no signs of cracking. A previous owner's name is neatly written on the fep in pencil. The text was probably exposed to damp conditions at some point but is now dry with a slight spine lean and very minimal foxing and staining. It is otherwise clean complete unmarked and easily read. This book is now very scarce in any of its 19th century editions usually found only in divinity schools and large university libraries.

Gould and Lincoln hardcover

Unlike approaches to moral philosophy that center on praiseworthiness and blameworthiness Youpa argues that Spinoza's moral philosophy is about how to live lovingly and joyously not hatefully or sorrowfully. It is fundamentally an ethics of joy. Central to this reading is a defense of the view that there is a way of life that is best for human beings and that what makes it best is its alignment with human nature. This is not significantly an ethics of accountability or what a person does or does not deserve. Morality's role is not to assign credit or blame to individuals in an economy of good and evil; rather it is to heal the sick and empower the vulnerable. It is an ethics centered on what with respect to mental and physical well-being requires our attention. Spinoza's ethics adheres to a medical model of morality enacting and embodying a system of care to ourselves care to others and care to things in the world around us. From this approach Youpa defends a comprehensive reading of Spinoza's moral philosophy including its realism pluralism and the importance of friendship and education which are the greatest sources of empowerment and joy. Empowering ourselves and others begins with love: the type of love that Spinoza refers to as the virtue of modestia or humble devotion to others with their true well-being in mind. Youpa's examination starts with an original interpretaion of Spinoza's theory of emotions and then turns to the metaphysical foundation of his moral philosophy and its normative and practical implications.".
