In it appear the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations . D'Alembert's treatise on winds was the only of his works honoured by a prize and ironically was later shown to be based on insufficient assumptions. D'Alembert assumed that wind patterns were the result of tidal effects on the atmosphere and he relegated the influence of heat to a minor role one that caused only local variations from the general circulation. Still as a work on atmospheric tides it was successful and Lagrange continued to praise d'Alembert's efforts many years later." DSB I p.113.

Norman 34.
Chez David l’aîné

He here gives the proof of THE FUNDAMENTAL THEOREM OF ALGEBRA called d'Alembert's theorem and later corrected by Gauss 1799.The theorem is based on these three assumptions:Every polynomial with real coefficients which is of odd order has a real root. This is a corollary of the intermediate value theorem. Every second order polynomial with complex coefficients has two complex roots. For every polynomial p with real coefficients there exists a field E in which the polynomial may be factored into linear terms. Also with an importent paper by Leonhard Euler "Mémoire sur l'Effet de la Propagation successive de la Lumiere dans l'Apparition tant des Planetes que des Cometes" Memoir on the effect of the successive propogation of light in the appeareance of both comets and planets. D'Alembert discusses the mathematical theory of vibrations of cords and hereby he was led to partial differential equations which he applied to the "Theory of Winds" and laid the base of a scientific meteorology. He rejected the conception of Edmund Halley that the general circulation of the atmosphere is significantly controlled by the distribution of solar heating and applies a mathematical theory based on Newton's law of gravitation thus explaining the winds by means of the gravitational forces from the sun and moon. - D'Alembert's name survives in the mathematics of today the "Dalabertian" for wave equation D'alembert's paradox in hydrodynamics etc. hardcover

72386Paris Briasson David Le Breton 1768. Oblong folio 39.7 x 67.6 cm. Broadsheet plate with a fine large engraving with fine contemporary hand-colouring gilt border and printed caption. = This is a highly unusual contemporarily coloured copy of an exceptionally large plate showing an extraordinarily small and peculiar animal. It was published in the atlas of the first folio edition of the famous Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences des arts et des métiers and is a highlight in the history of microscopy. The massive Encyclopédie was edited and partly written by Diderot d'Alembert and Voltaire being the first true encyclopaedia epitomizing the Age of Enlightenment. Published between 1751 to 1772 it synthesized the knowledge of the time. It became not only a source of knowledge but also a political weapon on the battleground for power between secular and ecclesiastical thinkers and writers. The plate was drawn by François Nicolás Martinet and engraved by Robert Bénard after the famous image of Robert Hooke's Micrographia from 1665. Its dimensions indicate that this plate comes from a large-paper copy which according to Brunet ".sont assez rares". Brunet does not record coloured copies. Plates with modern colouring are not unheard of but this is altogether different - not only is the colouring very well done but the printed border is carefully gilted too often yellow in modern colouring. Two vertical fold as always; a few minor marginal spots otherwise clean. The colouring bold and accurate. A very good copy. Exceedingly rare. Brunet 2 pp. 700-701; Nissen ZBI 4622; PMM 200. unknown
