A fine original copperplate engraving printed on heavy handmade rag stock published as part of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert's Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences des Arts et des Métiers; the essential exploratory encyclopedia of arts science and industry produced during the Age of Enlightenment. This keynote work extolled the artistic virtues and labors of the common man during pre-Revolutionary France. Didactic in nature the plates were engraved and documented in meticulous detail and represented a fine visual record of French culture and achievement. After the French Revolution society could thus be recreated here inspired by the illustrations and descriptions of the daily toils and talents of the common folk. 51-1438Paris: Chez Briasson David & Le Breton 1762-1767. 395 x 255 mm. with 18 pages of letterpress descriptionsRustic economy. Rustic economy is the art of knowing the useful and profitable products of the countryside appropriating and conserving them and drawing the greatest possible advantage from them. This method of enriching oneself has unlimited scope: it is a tax imposed on all matter even on the elements. A simple exposition of the subjects embraced by the term ‘rustic economy’ would be a considerable undertaking. 1 These are the primary ones: whoever wishes to live in the countryside and profit from his stay there should know the arts of agriculture and gardening in the finest detail. He should be ignorant of nothing which pertains to the buildings he requires for himself and his family servants animals and various crops; hunting fishing and falconry; stud farms water and forests; rustic work and the manufacture of a variety of products such as stoneware pottery lime brick iron etc. Although a man who devotes himself entirely to such pursuits is scorned by the common man these activities are all in accordance with nature sound health the broadening of useful knowledge the elevation of the mind a simple life a taste for good things virtue the commonweal integrity and good sense. For those subjects which pertain to rustic economy consult sections of this dictionary and articles: Hunting Fishing Agriculture Pheasantry Falconry Gardening Soil cultivation etc. Paris: Chez Briasson, David & Le Breton, 1762-1767. unknown
000284Paperback. Very Good. Lucotte Jacques-Raymond with engravings by Bénard Robert. The section on woodworking in buildings from the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert published initially in Paris between 1751 and 1772. This section folio 260x365mm is well bound for protection in 20th century brown thin card covers finished on the spine in green hessian or similar cloth; tiny worm hole in the extreme lower left margins of the first three or four leaves and with the usual slight browning around the margins but a very good complete copy with clear crisp text on 16 numbered pages and 38 full page copper engraved plates numbered I - XXIV but several with subnumbered plates in the particular subseries. The Encyclopédie the magnificent Enlightenment undertaking with the grand aim of publishing all the world's knowledge and intended to "change the way people think" appeared between 1751 and 1772 in 28 folio volumes with over 70000 articles and more than 3000 illustrations later supplemented with additional material and revised elements. It was the first general encyclopedia to include material on technology and on crafts entirely appropriately as the underlying focus of the work was on human reason rather than on theology or nature and because the editors wished to provide information applicable to people's everyday lives. There is no separate section title page and it's unclear exactly when this part was published but judging by the quality of the engravings it's most likely from the original edition or at least from a very early printing. The text consists of descriptions of the 38 plates written by the architect Jacques-Raymond Lucotte who also drew the material for the plates which were then engraved by Robert Bénard. Lucotte was responsible for a dozen craft articles which appeared in volumes IX to XVII and for over 650 illustrations in the Encylopédie. Bénard in turn was a major contributor to the Encyclopédie engraving something over 1800 plates. This is a very good desirable copy of a self-contained part of arguably the greatest and most ambitious publishing undertaking of the Enlightenment.

paperback
