1781400140Paris 1781. Fine. Folio. 12 laid paper leaves hand stitched paper spine. Title in manuscript on the first leaf followed by 21 manuscript pages foliated 1 2 2 3 – 10. In fine condition with light rubbing to the edges of the first leaf housed in a period-style quarter leather and cloth box with gilt-stamped rounded-spine and inner chemise. An original manuscript of this celebrated attack on French Finance Minister Jacques Necker arguably the most powerful man in France before the Revolution. Written surreptitiously by Philippe Henri de Grimoard an important military officer and trusted counselor to Louis XVI the letter was published in the guise of an open letter between two prominent intellectuals: from the anti-Enlightenment writer Louis-Antoine Caraccioli to Jean d’Alembert co-editor of the Encyclopédie.

As Director-General of Finance from 1776-1783 Necker controlled all of France’s wealth. In February 1781 he published his famous work: Compte rendu au roi the first public accounting of the royal finances of the French monarchy. This along with his reforming policies made him many enemies including Marie Antoinette. The stage was thus set for this “witty and well informed†public attack in which Necker is made to appear as a kind of magician of politics and finance capable of “mystifying the whole French nation†and guilty of “suppressions without reimbursements reforms without profit loans without limit or measure … .â€

As to whether this is the original manuscript or a compositor’s copy we cannot say with certainty. It is neatly written in a beautiful hand on the most expensive paper of the day. We know of only one record of the manuscript in an 1880 Index to the Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts in the British Museum. An historically important manuscript housed in a handsome drop-spine box. unknown

Disbound. = Part of the massive famous and notoriously complex Encyclopédie by Diderot and d'Alembert being the first true encyclopaedia. This is most if not all published on mining and mineralogy. The text pages contain a description of the plates subdivided in "Collections". In total the Regne minérale consists of seven "collections" with 47 plates which are all present. This includes 14 plates with fossils and 11 with crystals as well as three large folded plates of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1754 and 1757. Various other minéralogie sections not listed as "collections" follow this. These include for instance Géometrie souterraine one plate Sonde de terre three plates Instruments des mines two plates Coupe d'une mine three plates Mercure one plate and an explanatory text leaf Cobalt idem Souffre two plates and text etc. etc. Some of these sections dealing with specific minerals are quite large; for instance the one on Salpetre has four text pages and nine plates of which two are larger and folded. Another larger section deals with the Ardoiserie de la Meuse slate mining along the Meuse river with eight text pages and five plates a similar one with slate mining in the Anjou region and another large section on salt mining as well as one on fabricating gunpowder. In total there are 129 plates of which many are large and folded or double folded all with explanatory text leaves. Some soiling a few old paper repairs but in general a very good set. 72387Paris Briasson David Le Breton 1768. Oblong folio 39.2 x 45.9 cm. Broadsheet plate with a fine large engraving with fine contemporary hand-colouring gilt border and printed caption. = This is a highly unusual contemporarily coloured copy of an exceptionally large plate showing an extraordinarily small and peculiar animal. It was published in the atlas of the first folio edition of the famous Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences des arts et des métiers and is a highlight in the history of microscopy. The massive Encyclopédie was edited and partly written by Diderot d'Alembert and Voltaire being the first true encyclopaedia epitomizing the Age of Enlightenment. Published between 1751 to 1772 it synthesized the knowledge of the time. It became not only a source of knowledge but also a political weapon on the battleground for power between secular and ecclesiastical thinkers and writers. The plate was drawn by François Nicolás Martinet and engraved by Robert Bénard after the famous image of Robert Hooke's Micrographia from 1665. Its dimensions indicate that this plate comes from a large-paper copy which according to Brunet ".sont assez rares". Brunet does not record coloured copies. Plates with modern colouring are not unheard of but this is altogether different - not only is the colouring very well done but the printed border is carefully gilted too often yellow in modern colouring. A vertical fold as always; some weak marginal fraying a short tear in the left margin; a few minor marginal spots; otherwise clean. The colouring bold and accurate. A very good copy. Exceedingly rare. Brunet 2 pp. 700-701; Nissen ZBI 4622. unknown
