Encadrement doré aux plats, pièce de titre lie-de-vin avec nom d'auteur et titre au milieu du dos séparés d'un trait doré orné et distingués d'un double filet doré, double fleuron doré, deux filets dorés en coiffe et queue avec initiales dorées en queue. Large roulette aux contreplats, gardes en camaïeu bariolé. Tranchefile. Ex-libris italien à la première garde blanche. Tampon de Carlos Lacerda (1914-1977), homme politique et journaliste brésilien, bibliophile à ses heures, sur la page de titre. Revendiquant l'objectivité et l'impartialité, D'Alembert a touché ici un sujet polémique par essence. Repris par des anticléricaux plus qu'engagés, parfois défendu pour son sens de la nuance, il est encore décrié aujourd'hui par des "chercheurs" l'accusant de complotisme anti-jésuite. Son ouvrage tente d'expliquer les événements ayant mené à la dissolution de l'ordre jésuite par le gouvernement de Louis XIV. Sortant de la querelle entre jésuites et jansénistes, D'Alembert prophétise la disparition prochaine du jansénisme au profit d'une France post-sectaire, ce qui ne manquera pas de faire réagir. Prudent, D'Alembert s'était caché derrière une fausse adresse et un pseudonyme. Son texte demeure à juger par chaque lecteur.

Later plain wrappers. = Two suites on tapestry and weaving from the great French eighteenth-century Encyclopedie by Diderot and d'Alembert. With several pages of explanatory text. The fine plates show the way the famous Gobelin tapestry was produced. These pictorial tapestries were painted embroidered woven in colours using gold and silver thread and so forth. The plates show details of the process and large views of the weaving machinery the weavers at work etc. Text leaves a bit age-toned plates very good clean. unknown

The second set of plates shows designs for theatrical machines for simulating tempest tossed ships landslides fires.
