1678WRCLIT82195A Cologne: Chez Emanuel 1678 second imprint: A Amsterdam: Chez Jacob Smith 1678. 32531292errata30pp. 12mo. Contemporary stiff vellum. spine lettered in gilt. Small shelf-label shadow in middle of spine early ink note on verso of second title referring to the two title leaves offset a bit opposite and with faint bleed-through to recto first signature exhibits variations in lower edge trim size from leaf to leaf but a very good crisp copy. First edition in French of Spinoza's TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS 1670 translated by Gabriel de Saint Glain. Spinoza wrote a 30pp. addenda of "Remarques" in anticipation of the publication of this translation and the book was published with two variant titles and different imprints on two separate title leaves -- both are present in this copy. The book had been officially banned in 1674 by the State of Holland. "Spinoza's thought a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and Hebraic tradition in which he grew up is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters and the Tractatus contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion in that speculation and precepts of conduct cannot collide. Spinoza to whom any controversy was abhorrent did not publish the Tractatus until 1670 and then anonymously with a bogus imprint" - PMM. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 153 Latin edition. 16776323Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz 1677. Very Good/First edition of Spinoza's most influential philosophical work "Ethics" in which the philosopher bridged the Cartesian duality of body and spirit by maintaining that the universe including God constitutes a unified infinite and all-inclusive "Substance" of which corporeality and spirituality were merely attributes -- a unity expressed in the controversial phrase "Deus sive Natura" God or Nature. Ethics is thus considered the first systematic exposition of pantheism the philosophy in which God is identified with the entire universe' Norman. Contents also include first printings of his correspondence some of which deals with optics the telescope and his views on Descartes and a simple Hebrew grammar composed at the request of friends.
