The paper is lightly bumped with its edges slightly faded. There is a small tear to the right edge. Folded twice for mailing. Good. <p>Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire writes in French to an English gentleman who has been referred to him by Lord Houghton. He apologizes for failing to find him at a crowded function. He explains that he had ordered the guards to make sure that the gentleman got past the door and had also brought with him a friend who spoke very good English. He says that he is completely at the gentleman's disposal if he can be of use in acquainting him with "nos affaires politiques" which at the moment are very complicated.<p>Jules Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire 1805-1895 was a French statesman and philosopher. In his early years he worked for the Ministry of Finance and was an active journalist. After 1830 he gave up politics in order to devote himself to the study of ancient philosophy undertaking a translation of Aristotle which occupied him for most of his life. After the revolution of 1848 he was elected a republican deputy from the department of Seine-et Oise. Following further political upheavals he was apppointed senator for life. Graesse 215. Moss 129. Sylburg received praise from both Moss and Dibdin for his scholarship on Aristotle's writings. Aristotle's Politics are sometimes regarded as the natural sequel to his Nicomachean Ethics: once one knows what it is for a human being to flourish one can consider how the laws of human society can best guide and promote said flourishing. Aristotle undertook a massive effort to examine dozens of Greek city-state constitutions and aimed to discern the best and the worst political principles within them. His Politics then stands as a sort of history of Greece and its political structures. The Politics also contains an examination of the theory behind various forms of government: monarchy aristocracy democracy etc. Aristotle's Economics contains a thorough examination of both macro and microeconomics in ancient Greece. The economics of a city-state a kingdom and of an individual's home are all dissected here and the philosophy behind good home and wealth management is discussed at length. Both his Politics and Economics were highly influential on medieval society and pre-1850 publications of these works have become difficult to find in commerce. A touch of rubbing to the extremities. The Metaphysics first edition of 1801. <p>The first collected English translations of Aristotle's works from Orphic fragments by Neoplatonist scholar Thomas Tyler 1758-1835. Provenance of famed bibliophile and collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer whose well-curated and respected library expanded to nearly 20000 volumes. Bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin remarked that she was "the head of all female book collectors in Europe." Known for her philanthropic endeavors she donated a sum of 50 pounds to Patrick Bronte father of Charlotte Bronte when he was widowed in 1821. Currer also contributed an unknown amount to the Clergy Daughter's School that the Bronte sisters attended. Scholars postulate that Charlotte chose the non de plume of "Currer Bell" for her first published 1847 novel Jane Eyre in honor of Currer's philanthropy. A desirable set even without Currer's bookplate that seldom comes up for sale. Printed for the Translator by Robert Wilks unknown

Some shallow chipping at spine ends and in a couple of places along joints. Splitting of cloth at top 1 1/2" of both joints on volume II though boards and hinges remain firmly attached. Interiors bright and clean. A near fine set overall. Thomas Twining had produced the first useable English translation of Aristotle's Poetics in 1789. This is the second edition of 1812 edited by his nephew. <br /> <br /> This 2-volume set has an attractive armorial bookplate bearing the name "Hoar" on the front pastedown of each volume. According to a pencilled notation on the rear pastedown of volume I the set was owned by George Frisbie Hoar Abolitionist Radical Republican and Massachusetts senator from 1877-1904. <br /> <br /> A handsome set in its original cloth bindings. "The want of a fresh edition of Aristotle's Politics has long been felt; and the present one is due to an application arising from an increasing demand. It is the aim of this edition to exhibit as far as has been found possible the present state of knowledge on subjects connected with the text; as also to guide the student into a wider field of illustration and reflection than would be afforded by a literal commentary. The text adopted is that of Bekker on which the laborious accuracy of Stahr has ingrafted little substantial improvement. Care has been taken throughout to direct the student to all important variations of the MSS. or suggestions on the part of commentators."Condition:Clean covers; fading to cloth on the spine and at the top edge of the back cover. There is a 3" tear to the cloth at the top-right corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the text pages are mostly clean with only a small number of pages at the front about 10 or so that have some words/lines of text underlined lightly in pencil.no other notable issues found. Quarter-bound in the orginal contemporary binding with a beige cloth spine and paper covered boards. No Titling to the spine or boards. Probably had a paper label - now missing. All covers are a little marked/grubby and there is a 2" narrow split in the top inner edge to the cloth of the spine - but all hinges tight and sound - it's just the cloth that has split. The corners edges and head/tail of the spine are bumped with a little scraping to the corners but generally sound tight and complete. Plain Endpapers with traces of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. No Inscriptions but a brown mark O.25 cm at it's widest by 2.00 cm long affecting the blank edge and fore edge of the last 20pp and the Index - possibly old dried-brown ink Most pages uncut. Rough edged pages with some light foxing spots. Internally a few pages browned some foxing creasing and light thumbing but generally the text is white and very clean. 476 pp 11 pp Index. Overall considering the book is 200 years old this is a Very Clean Tight and Bright copy. "Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics are an alternative to Plato. Aristotle's rhetoric tries to strike a middle position. Aristotle says rhetoric and poetry are a technique the Rhetoric is a handbook. Aristotle says the speaker needs to appeal to appropriate information for the particular setting. Much like a lawyer's argument not just relying on facts need to appeal to people's emotions. Aristotle does understand that rhetoric can be used in a harmful way. Aristotle lays out three features in rhetoric: 1. Ethos= character of the speaker also charisma speaker earns the audience's trust use of body language. 2. Pathos= condition of the hearer. 3. Logos= essential bearing on political persuasion truth. Plato's concern by definition therefore excludes speech because it deals with emotion. These three conditions must be in play for a speech to be successful. The rhetoric contains a detailed analysis of the different human emotions and how to elicit them in a speech. It was first published in 1684 and written by an unknown author who falsely claimed to be Aristotle. As a consequence the author is now described as a Pseudo-Aristotle the collective name for unidentified authors who masqueraded as Aristotle. The title of the work was possibly chosen because Aristotle was seen as a sex expert in early modern England. Another popular pseudo-Aristotelian text which covered sex and reproduction Aristotle's Problems 1595 had been responsible for this reputation. The real Aristotle had also written works about the reproduction of animals such as History of Animals and Generation of Animals and was considered an authority on scientific matters in general. hardcover

A Dissertation upon Rhetoric" translated from the Greek of Aristotle by Daniel Michael Crimmin Esq. was published in London by J.J. Stockdale in 1811. This work is a translation of Aristotle's treatise on rhetoric a foundational text in the field. It was likely part of a larger effort to make classical Greek texts accessible to an English-speaking audience. Translator Daniel Michael Crimmin was a scholar with connections to Trinity College Dublin and the Middle Temple. London-based publisher J.J. Stockdale was well known for producing scholarly works. Aristotle's Rhetoric was classified with a few other works notably the Poetics as encheiridia i.e. handbooks providing foundational treatment of a subject essentially practical guides rather than abstract treatises. As such The Rhetoric in particular was widely circulated albeit in Latin and extensively cited. Rhetoric was of course useful in politics and law but it became increasingly embraced by theological educators. Persuasion is by means of the hearers whenever they are led on into passion by the speech for we do not render our judgments the same way when grieved as when delighted or when friendly as when hostile Sachs 2009. The "Dissertation upon Rhetoric" unravels the basic principles of the art of argumentation. Aristotle's Rhetoric is a cornerstone of Western rhetorical theory and this translation by Crimmin made The Rhetoric available to a wider audience in the early 19th century. This First Edition rarely appears in commerce or at auction making it a scarce item. Its absence from recent sales underscores its rarity often a desirable trait for collectors of classical works and early translations. Gilded spine with title in contemporary marbled calf.
