Having formed its outline during his travels in Italy and Germany the author revised and expanded the work during his stay with his friend Sir Thomas More in Bucklersbury England. "Folly" is considered one of the most influential works in Western literature and a catalyst for the Reformation. It was a false imprint by Benbow and Perkins in London Soho. Benbow was eventually prosecuted not only for omitting the name of his printers but also for fraudulent publishing. This title was the only title published under the Erasmo Perchino imprint. There is an Avviso initialled E P Erasmo Perkins: "La presente edizione stata con la Maggio diligenza risconstrata e corretta servira di saggio per una raccolta di opera scelte Ieglesi notanto in verso quanto in prosa che intend e pubblicare in egual forma carta e caratteri con la maggiore accuratezza per la correzione del testo." The melodies sweet amorous and poetic are exact. This copy is quite charming and full of character. It has been rebound. Pocket sized. Embossed impressed leather covers. These are rubbed by handling. There is wear to all corners seams and edges. They are secure and benign. Within there are blank pages before and after the text. The text pages themselves are full of character and curiosity. Imperfectly printed and set. The pages have marks from age and storage and use. They are genial patient clear generous spirited and really rather special. A very scarce limited reproduction of these poems from Erasmus this being a gift copy signed by the author and publisher. This work was printed in an edition of 100 numbered copies as well as a "very small number of copies" printed as gifts. This copy which is unnumbered is likely one of these copies bearing the signature of the author and publisher to the verso of the title page. "Exemplaire offert" printed to same page.Very rare to find copies of this work across limitations. Offering a photolithographic facsimile of previously unpublished poems written in 1513 by eminent Dutch humanist theologian and pioneering philologist and educationalist Erasmus of Rotterdam. With a fascinating biographical introduction and notes intended to give context to the time in which the poems were written. With a colour plate containing a map fragment taken from an atlas belonging to the Royal Library of Brussels originally produced in the late 16th century. This fragment represents the corner of land where Erasmus spent most of his childhood and youth: Gouda and Steyn. Bound in half morocco with marbled paper covered boards. Externally with rubbing to the extremities notably to the spine which is darkened. Front blank detached but present otherwise internally firmly bound. The new binding follows the arrangement of Darwin's work in volumes but retains the original pagination therefore pages 1-204 contains The Economy of Vegetation and The Love of Plants. Following on under pages 1-100 is The Temple of Nature. Finally a number of plates are included; The Beautiful Cupid The Fertilization of Egypt The Portland Vase and Tartarian Lamb The Portland Vase plus Handle and Bottom of the Vase Sections of the Earth Sections of the Strata at St Anthon's Colliery and four further Botanical plates. The boards are in fine condition as is the marbled pageblock. Four pencilled references noted on rear original free paper. The initial pages and the plates at the rear are notably tanned foxed and marked but the text within is in extremely good condition; clear bright and generally unmarked; minor and occasional foxing only. First Portuguese edition translated by Henrique Xavier Baeta. This is a translation of Darwin's Zoonomia and part of his Materia medica. Baeta took his bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Coimbra then his PhD in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. In 1800 he came to Lisbon because in Coimbra he was being persecuted and began to begin the exercise of his profession.
