A charming descriptive volume on the daily outdoors life of Parisians at the turn of the century with illustrations. First edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding.With a coloured watercolour frontispiece and many monochrome plates and vignettes illustrated by the author and other artists. This book vividly depicts the various outdoor activities and sights one can find Parisians doing at the turn of the century told largely through the author's own anecdotes and observations. With four leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. F. Berkeley Smith often explored Parisians and French culture in the early 20th century particularly Bohemian Paris with his other works including 'How Paris Amuses Itself' and 'The Real Latin Quarter'. In the original cloth binding with tipped-in illustration to the front board. Externally very smart with mild rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Slight fading to the spine cloth. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a small tide mark affecting the top corner of the first few leaves. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine as called for. The D/W is a bright and attractive example with a touch of fraying at the spine tips but with no loss. The rear flap is blind-stamped: The Circulating Library Harrods Ltd SW1. The rear flap is creased with minor chipping and with a couple of closed tears. One of the rarest Berkeley first editions from the 1930's in our experience. Contemporary partisan reporting and editorializing in defense of the local struggle for People's Park a vacant parcel of land in Berkeley on which the University proposed to build a soccer field. Centerspread is large poster depicting protesters erecting a small tree ala the iconic photo of Marines erected the American flag on Iwo Jima.
