Freelon 1895-1960 was a prominent Harlem Renaissance artist pioneering educator and civil rights activist. 224 pp. with color frontispiece "Mother and Child" by Sargeant Johnson and 4 pp. color insert "The Amistad Murals" tipped in facing p 124. Bound in publisher's green cloth lettered in gilt. Very Good with darkened spine and edges with light soiling overall. Extremities lightly worn with minor foxing to endsheets. Faint toning to edges of textblock. No jacket likely as issued. <p>An important association between Locke "Dean" of the Harlem Renaissance and popularizer of African American art and Freelon on the first serious book-length study of Black artists. Two of Freelon's Impressionist-style paintings are featured in this work alongside work by Edmonia Lewis Henry Ossawa Tanner Hughie Lee-Smith and Jacob Lawrence.
