1658180973Venice: Bartolomeo Federici 1658. One of the earliest horse brand books Rare first edition illustrating and describing over 100 early horse brands in use in the Veneto Lombardia and Romagna regions of northern Italy. This copy finely bound for Count Pierre de Mornay was exhibited at the Grolier Club in January 1895. We have traced only one copy of this edition in auction records in over 60 years and fewer than 10 copies in libraries worldwide. Brand books intended as registers of brands used to identify livestock originated in Renaissance Italy to record horse markings. They were typically printed in small pocket-size format to be used in the field and with one single illustration per page to facilitate consultation. The earliest example known is Libro de marchi di cavalli Venice 1569. Giovanni Battista Nani 1616-1678 was a Venetian historian and politician. In the address to the reader he explains that he composed the book as a guide to the best breeds of northern Italy as he could not find many described in the only source he had: Francesco Liberati's La perfettione del Cavallo 1639. The brands consist of initials within circles clover leaves crowns and shields often simplified versions of family symbols and coats of arms. Each is accompanied by a note indicating the owner or breeder and which part of the horse the brand is applied to. Page 63 shows the brand of the Medici family in Florence. On page 69 is Nani's family brand the same appearing on the hind leg of the newly branded horse on the frontispiece suggesting that the man holding it is the author himself or his patron. This copy features the printed note "ad instanza di Bartolomeo Federici" at foot of the title page and the initials "B.F." on a8r absent in some copies. This variant is possibly the earliest issue see Dejager. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. Sextodecimo 110 x 70 mm pp. xvi 112 lacking leaf of text F8. Woodcut frontispiece and 105 illustrations text within ruled border tailpieces. 19217948London / Kyoto: Luzac & Co./ Eastern Buddhist Society 1921. First separate edition. 22x15cm 1 43pp. Red sheep backed cloth boards spine lettered in black. Samuel Weiser ticket at front Luzac & Co ticket at rear original plain wrappers bound in. Some pencil annotations to front blank wrapper page block somewhat toned and with a few edge wrinkles. Very good.

First separate printing of one of D.T. Suzuki's 1870-1966 influential essays on the training of a Zen Buddhist monk. Suzuki helped spread interest in Eastern philosophy and specifically Zen and Shin Buddhism to the West in the 20th century. This essay first appeared in his Eastern Buddhist journal which was launched after he and his wife founded the Eastern Buddhist Society in 1921 at Otani University and has subsequently been anthologized in many collections on Zen. Interestingly we find mention of this separate printing in catalogs from Luzac & Co the prominent London-based bookseller and publisher of books on the East as early as 1921.

In any event it is a scarce publication with OCLC citing holdings only at Columbia Northwestern and the University of Oregon.

From the library of Blanche DeVries and Pierre Bernard. 1900215566Japan. Circa1900. Black and white printed illustrated fan. A few tiny holes visible when held to the light but overall in very good condition. Measures 36.5 x 24cm when open. The fan featuring an illustration of Soji-ji the original headquarters temple of the Soto-shu in Ishikawa Prefecture was most likely produced for fundraising efforts following a devastating fire that destroyed some of its main buildings in 1898. Despite efforts to reconstruct the lost buildings over several years it was eventually decided to relocate the headquarters temple to Yokohama a move completed in 1911. The fan depicts the original temple grounds showcasing numerous buildings and landscapes with the scale of each structure labeled on the left. It is probable that this fan was distributed to or given to those who contributed to the reconstruction project. . unknown
