19435014Oklahoma City 1943. Very good. Broadsheet approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. With original mailing envelope. Original folds light toning and wear. A rare advertising circular issued by Sun-Ray Hair Preparation an African-American beauty supply company based in Oklahoma City. The circular features illustrations and brief descriptions for three main products -- a "Hair Dressing Comb" a "Hair Straightening and Shampoo Comb" available in both metal and wooden handles and a "Curling Iron" aimed at African-American women "Every woman has to have a curling iron and this one will give you service and satisfaction". The verso of the broadsheet is an order form which is filled out in ink pen by a woman in Independence Kansas who ordered a hair dressing comb and "hair pressers." Both the circular and the original transmittal envelope include the name of the company agent M.F. Luster. OCLC lists just a single copy of this circular in a small collection of Sun-Ray material located at the Hagley Museum. unknown

Manuscript caption verso reading “Joyce Warner Tallahassee / Miss Black America†with newspaper article affixed and stamped “SEP231971â€. Near Fine. A press photo of Joyce Warner who was crowned Miss Black America in 1971. The Miss Black America competition was founded in 1968 by entrepreneur J. Morris Anderson as a protest of Miss America’s whites-only policy; the first Miss Black America competition was held in Atlantic City New Jersey on the same day and location as that year’s Miss America.<br /> <br /> As described in the newspaper article affixed to the back of the photo Joyce Warner refused to attend subsequent Miss Black America competitions alleging that the organizers had misled her about the prizes she claimed to have never received a promised $600 scholarship $5000 cash and trips to Haiti and the Catskills and used her photograph for cosmetics advertising without her permission.<br /> <br /> The Miss Black America pageant is still active; Miss America hosted its first Black contestant Sheryl Browne in 1971. unknown

New York: Wemple & Company 1900 Fold-out and free-standing chromolithographed triptych trade card with advertising on verso for both Floreston Cologne and Parker's hair balsams and tonics 14cm. Two outer panels show vases with flowers pink peonies and blue forget-me-nots while the middle panel features a pensive child wearing a heavy bonnet. Margins rubbed and corners gently bumped; Verso margins scuffed and joint printing lightly faded. A scarce and Very Good or better example of quackery ephemera. For the low price of a bottle of perfume or by sending in your six cents and address you too could own one of these "screens. Wemple & Company unknown

A work promoting the use of California lemons as a health and beauty product for use on the hair skin hands manicuring teeth and gums. Seemingly aimed at a female audience with the illustrations depicting what could be considered Flapper Girls. Suggestions for application and use of lemons included. What appears to be either an artist's or photographer's monogram visible on the front cover looking like an M with a triangle. GOOD condition. Some fading soiling and toning to the covers with a few tiny stains present. Extremities bumped in a bit scuffed. C.F.G.E., Publisher unknown

First editions of these exceedingly scarce Good Housekeeping cosmetics beauty and hair-care from the noted columnist and editor of Good Housekeeping magazine’s Ruth Murrin. Although she lacked a medical degree she established her professional status and credentials by overseeing the magazine’s Beauty Clinic which was a practical laboratory run by women and specialists in order to offer correct health advice and beauty tips to their readership. She was a key advocate of the Good Housekeeping Bureau which had originally been founded by Harvey W. Wiley considered the “Father†of the Federal Pure Food and Drug Acts. The guide included here encompasses hundreds of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products available for women on the eve of World War II.
