8vo., First Edition, some very light and inoffensive spotting (mainly to gutters); original black cloth, upper board lettered in red, backstrip lettered in gilt (lettering a little faded but wholly legible), red top, fore-edges lightly spotted else a very good, bright, firm copy. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Cape's advertisement leaf, printed on yellow stock and promoting Nichols' 'Down the Graden Path' (the first of his keenly sought-after garden titles), is tipped-in at rear free endpaper. This leaf is very often missing. Some six years before the event Nicholas is forecasting the coming of WWII and here delivers a clear exposition of his (subsequently notorious) pacifist outlook. In later life, this work was to assume for its writer significant personal value. SIGNED COPIES ARE SCARCE.

Very minor shelfwear with light bump to 1 corner. Minor soiling to front panel of DJ. Creasing along top edge with a bit of chipping and 1 tear (1.5 cm). ; This final volume in the Literary and Educational Writings contains diverse woks spanning a generation. They demonstrate Erasmus' skill in applying classical rhetoric to contemporary Christian needs. Four are short rhetorical pieces; the next group illustrates facets of Erasmus' classical scholarship and includes several works that bear witness to Erasmus' friendship with Thomas More. The last and most expansive piece in the volume, the Lingua, has not previously been translated into English. This work represents Erasmus' growing criticism of his theological position by both Catholics and reformers. ; Collected Works of Erasmus 29; 546 pages

The case of Johann Reuchlin, one of the best-known controversies of the 16th century, has been interpreted in many ways: as a case of anti-Semitism, a controversy between humanists and scholastics, or a case foreshadowing the Reformation debate. The last interpretation was facilitated by Luther himself, who repeatedly linked his case with that of the biblical humanists Lefevre, Erasmus, and Reuchlin. In this lively critical analysis, Erika Rummel describes how the second interpretation, which was promoted in the 19th century, was replaced after WWII by a new sensitivity toward the anti-Semitic elements of the affair. More recently, however, the favoured approach is a more nuanced interpretation, acknowledging that the controversy is informed by a combination of social and intellectual currents and reflects both anti-Semitism and academic strife. The section containing the analysis is followed by documents illustrating the case, some of them translated for the first time into English. ; 0.5 x 9.1 x 6 Inches; 208 pages
