Full calf G. 2 volumes xiilvi239pp viii339pp in vol II pagination jumps at 306 to 309 but the text is complete b/w engraved frontis to each volume grand total of 16 engraved plates armorial bookplate of the Baring family over an earlier bookplate of James Drummond upper board to volume I detached marginal worming to both volumes occasional affecting the text or plate edge but with the meaning legible from the context occasional burn mark & smudges leather rubbed & worn with some loss to the corners & edges. The forth edition of this much reprinted edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses which had first appeared in 1717 & was editied by Garth with Dryden the providing much of the translating. It was to become the standard text of Ovid's Magnum Opus in English. The plates consist of a portrait of Queen Caroline consort of King George II as the dedicatee plus 15 plates showing scenes from the poems each dedicated to a different English noblewoman. a different English noblewoman.
