Very good/Accompanying box has some wear but is in good condition. This is the third issue in the Lincoln Man of America series by one of America's foremost historical artists Mort Kunslter. This 8.5 inch diameter plate with a striking colorful image was produced by the Edwin M. Knowles China Company in an edition limited to 150 firing days. Künstler in 1965 was commissioned by National Geographic to create what became his first historic painting. He also created posters for movies such as The Poseidon Adventure and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. By the 1970s he was painting covers for Newsweek and other magazines with much of his work during being in advertising art. In 1977 his first major gallery exhibition brought new attention to his talents as a historical artist. By the 1980s he was acclaimed as America's foremost Civil War artist and would eventually create over 350 Civil War paintings alone. Besides his Civil War paintings he created historical art of the American Revolution through the Korean and Vietnam wars along with paintings of World War II. His artistic output places him at the forefront of contemporary historical realism. NASA made him their official artist for the Space Shuttle Columbia. In 1993 a one-hour television special Images of the Civil War - The Paintings of Mort Künstler was shown on the A&E TV network. He has received numerous honors and awards and at least nine books are dedicated to featuring his artwork. Edwin M. Knowles was the son of Isaac Watt Knowles a founder and partner in Knowles Taylor and Knowles Company. He was educated at Allegheny College and Harvard University. In 1890 Knowles assumed the management of the Potters Supply Company located in East Liverpool Ohio. In 1900 Edwin M. Knowles founded the Edwin M. Knowles China Company. The company’s offices were located in East Liverpool Ohio. The plant was in Chester West Virginia. Knowles’ goal was to manufacture the highest quality semi-vitreous china ware. Products included dinnerware kitchenware specialties and toilet wares. In 1913 the company opened a new plant in Newell West Virginia. In the early 1930s Knowles employed over 700 workers. The firm consolidated production at its Newell facility selling the Chester plant to Harker Pottery. In 1938 Vincent Broomhall designed a line of kitchen accessories that were available in seven different colors. Knowles continued to introduce new lines including Potomac 1941 Twin Oaks 1953-1954 Four Seasons 1959 and Street Song 1959. Each line featured dozens of patterns. Edward M. Knowles died on February 9 1941. Frederick Blackmore Lawrence became president. When Lawrence died in 1948 William A. Harris Jr. succeeded him. He remained as president until Knowles ceased operations in 1962. In the 1970s the Bradford Exchange bought the rights to the Knowles name and used the name for marketing purposes as a back stamp on some collector/limited edition plates. The Bradford Exchange is an American producer and seller of collectible goods jewelry sports memorabilia and apparel. Now part of the Bradford Group it was founded in 1973 as The Bradford Gallery of Collector's Plates by J. Roderick MacArthur. The company created its first live price quotation market in 1983 but increasingly turned to creating new lines of collectibles rather than just facilitating exchanges between collectors.
