Very good. <br /> <br /> Very uncommon juvenile work from Scotland about which scant information is to be found. The story concerns Mabel Minnie and Mona two schoolgirl friends and their archenemy who develop and undertake a mission to educate the poor children of the miners living in the row houses down by the pit. The idea is to use gentler methods of introducing Christianity at which the local missionaries and curates have failed:<br /> <br /> "We will take lessons from them and try to avoid what seems to have been their great mistake - injudiciousness; and perhaps showing a little too plainly that they considered them heathen and were determined to convert them at any cost."<br /> <br /> <br /> The book contains themes of friendship and antagonism philanthropy and stewardship faith and hope. However perhaps most interestingly the story explores death and loss as the young protagonists first grapple with the passing of a miner's wife from consumption. SPOILER ALERT Then Mabel becomes ill and Minnie must provide her and others hope as the young girl dies from fever due to a ruptured blood vessel.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates perhaps 3 physical copies of this rare book for the young 19th century reader. . 1737100960<p>Borgo San Donnino December 1737. 1737. Good. - Over 104 words penned in a secretarial hand on 12 inch high by 8-1/8 inch wide laid paper with an attached integral address leaf. Enrichetta the Duchess of Parma offers her thanks for Count Antonio Berni Canan's expressions of kindness following the death of her father Rinaldo d'Este 1655-Oct. 26 1737. Loosely translated from the Italian Enrichetta writes: "Recognizing very clearly your customary politeness and kindness in the courteous office that you were pleased to share with me on the occasion of the very heavy loss I suffered through the death of the Most Serene Lord Duke my Father of illustrious memory I attest to you my singular gratitude in the act of thanking you for it as I do most vividly. -- And also responding to the happy announcement of good tidings which on the same occasion you wished to put forward to me for the recurrence of Holy Christmas I pray the Lord to fill you with all the most desirable contentments." Signed "Enrichetta D__ di Parma Nata Psa. di Mod.a" Enrichetta Duchess of Parma born Princess of Modena. Addressed in ink with a paper over wax seal on the verso of the attached address leaf. There is worming in the upper half of the letter barely touching on a couple of letters and some additional worming below the text which though it does not affect the text runs through the seal. Folded several times with a couple of tiny holes at the intersection of the folds. Good.</p><p>Duchess of Parma by marriage to her cousin Antonio Farnese Duke of Parma Princess Enrichetta d'Este 1702-1777 served as Regent of Parma during her alleged pregnancy in the period after the death of her husband in 1731. A Princess of Modena she had been among those seriously considered as a possible bride for Louis XV the king of France though the French Prime Minister the Duke of Bourbon regarded her inferior rank as an impediment. Her marriage to Antonio Farnese was arranged by Count Anvidi his secretary of state. The day prior to his death Antonio announced that Enrichetta was pregnant and a Regency council for the potential heir consisting of Enrichetta a bishop the first Secretary of State and two gentlemen of the Court was formed following Antonio's death. The Queen of Spain and the Pope supporting the 12 year old Don Carlos claim to the Duchy questioned her pregnancy. Though initially supported by the Emperor who opposed Spanish influence the Second Treaty of Vienna officially recognized the Infante Don Charles as the Duke of Vienna and Piacenza and the Emperor was forced to retract his support. Enrichetta discontinued her original plan to arrange a simulated birth. She later married Prince Leopold of Hesse-Darmstadt.</p> Borgo San Donnino, December, 1737.

1693698811693. Leyden F. Haaring 1693 12° 8 172 alter Pergamenteinband. Rare - First and only edition of this work on the human digestion! Jacob Le Mort 1650-1718 after completing his studies he worked in Johann Rudolph Glauber's pharmacy in Amsterdam in 1667 and after Glauber's death in 1672 he set up a chemical laboratory in Leiden. Here he gave lectures on pharmacy and botany from 1675 and was admitted to the medical college in 1677. To this end he obtained his doctorate in medicine on 13 July 1678 with a thesis entitled 'De Medicamentis Galenicis' under Jacob Vallan at the University of Utrecht. In 1690 he became a lecturer in chemistry and head of the chemical laboratory in Leiden. After being granted a teaching licence at the medical faculty in 1692 he was appointed professor of chemistry and medicine on 6 May 1702 a position he took up with his inaugural lecture 'De concordantia operum naturae chymiae et medicinae'. With the appointment of this chair the chemical sciences were given a recognised place in Leiden's scientific world for the first time. As a member of the teaching staff he was also involved in the organisational tasks of the Leiden educational institution and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1706/07 a position he resigned with his speech 'De empirica doctrina medica'. After his death Herman Boerhaave took over his chair of chemistry. He was familiar with Boyle's writings imbued with the atomic theory and Descartes Followed in paying special attention to the shapes of the particles and opponent of the contemporary view of blood circulation which he defined as a 'Doctrina cadaverosa' without any real use. In his work as a chemist he investigated the fermentation theory of Franciscus Sylvius which he found unpersuasive. This work contains research of considerable interest primarily on the fermentation of organic substances and mixtures of food.
