He was best known for his studies of German philosophers most notably Hegel some of whose works he translated into highly regarded English editions. While reputedly forbidding in manner he was known as an able and effective teacher and writer who succeeded in greatly improving the understanding of German philosophy in the English-speaking world. He died at the age of 52 after a bicycle accident near Oxford. His writings included The Logic and Prolegomena of Hegel 1873 a translation of Hegel's Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences. It was still regarded as "the most masterly and influential of all English translations of Hegel" when it was republished in 1975. This work was sponsored by the New Haven Colony Historical Society. There is a substantial chapter on New Haven Architecture by William A. Wiedersheim as well as a chapter on The Social History of New Haven by Judith A. Schiff. There is also a chapter on New Haven and the Sea by noted historian Gaddis Smith. Wiedersheim III graduated from the Haverford School and Yale College in 1940. As a naval officer during WW II he received combat citations from Admirals Halsey and Nimitz. He was director of the New Haven Colony Historical Society. Judith Schiff November 26 1937 – July 11 2022 was an American archivist. She was chief research archivist at Yale University and historian for the city of New Haven Connecticut. George Gaddis Smith December 9 1932 – December 2 2022 was an American historian who was the Larned Professor Emeritus of History at Yale University and an expert on U.S. foreign relations and maritime history. In April 1638 the main party of five hundred Puritans who had left the Massachusetts Bay Colony under the leadership of Reverend John Davenport and London merchant Theophilus Eaton sailed into the harbor. It was their hope to set up a theological community with the government more closely linked to the church than that in Massachusetts and to exploit the area's potential as a port. In 1661 the Regicides who had signed the death warrant of Charles I of England were pursued by Charles II. Two of them Colonel Edward Whalley and Colonel William Goffe fled to New Haven for refuge. Davenport arranged for them to hide in the West Rock hills northwest of the town. A third judge John Dixwell later joined the others. None of the three were ever returned to England for trial. On July 5 1779 2600 loyalists and British regulars under General William Tryon landed in New Haven Harbor and raided the town of 3500. A militia of Yale students had been preparing for battle and former Yale president and Yale Divinity School professor Naphtali Daggett rode out to confront the Redcoats. New Haven was not torched as the invaders preserving many of the town's colonial features. New Haven has many architectural landmarks dating from every important time period and architectural style in American history. The city has been home to a number of architects and architectural firms including Ithiel Town and Henry Austin in the 19th century and Cesar Pelli Warren Platner Kevin Roche Herbert Newman and Barry Svigals in the 20th. Cass Gilbert of the Beaux-Arts school designed New Haven's Union Station and the New Haven Free Public Library and was also commissioned for a City Beautiful plan in 1919. Frank Lloyd Wright Marcel Breuer Alexander Jackson Davis Philip C. Johnson Gordon Bunshaft Louis Kahn James Gamble Rogers Frank Gehry Charles Willard Moore Stefan Behnisch James Polshek Paul Rudolph Eero Saarinen and Robert Venturi all have designed buildings in New Haven. Yale's 1950s-era Ingalls Rink designed by Eero Saarinen was included on the America's Favorite Architecture list. Windsor Publications, Inc paperback
