A highly important introduction to Spinoza's ideas, most of the contents being an essay by Henri comte de Boulainvilliers (1658-1722) , published posthumously, but widely circulated in manuscript under the title Essai de metaphysique dans les principes de R. De Spinoza (here called Refutation) , which was influential in the dissemination and popularisation of Spinoza's thought in France'. The work by Orobio, a free-thinking Jewish doctor living in Holland, was first published in 1681. The text actually by Fenelon occupies only ten pages. The book was sold sous le manteau' but circulated widely, although both De Bure and Peignot state that it is rarer than Spinoza's own works. Contains: Vie de Spinosa [par M.
