Herewith we provide these three letters verifying indeed Will Bradley supplied the drawing for the design to the title page in the book bearing a decidedly Will Bradley flair. A wonderful grouping marrying author artist and publisher. Book is near fine with brown stamped cover design most likely by Bradley full-page design on title page by Bradley top edges gilt others all uncut 149pp. The Dial Press unknown books

The text leaves are printed in green with inset illustrations; the six full color plates by Gertrude Bradley were printed by Edmund Evans. Laid in is a two-page autograph letter signed from Parsons to Mrs. Baxter dated Feb. 7 1903 with the original mailing envelope which reads: "I have just obtained from the publishers a copy of my little book on China and take great pleasure in sending it to you . 'All the world's a stage' but the stage for the next world drama is I think the Orient and therefore it is interesting to study the players. At any rate this little book is a record of the most interesting experience that I ever expect to have." "Parsons . accepted the direction of a survey of some 1000 miles of railway in China primarily on the line from Hankow to Canton. The party passed through the then 'closed province' of Hu-nan and the success of the entire venture depended not alone on engineering skill but primarily upon the ability of the leader of the expedition to meet the extremely difficult diplomatic problems involved. Nevertheless the mission was accomplished and the small group of American engineers to the surprise of many of their friends returned in safety" DAB. That very same railroad line is still in use today. Parsons 1859-1932 founded Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc. one of the largest American civil engineering firms. Although it has no date the box lists it as number 4051 a more uncommon set than the 4008 or 4005 that are often found. <br/><br/>Cards in Near Fine condition housed in a Very Good plus box. A pencil sketch with watercolor shading depicting part of Fort Monroe Virginia drawn for potential publication in HARPER'S WEEKLY in October 1861 by Bradley S. Osbon freelance reporter and self-described "sailor of fortune" with his name signed on the lower left and on the verso. Osbon made several written and illustrated contributions to HARPER's WEEKLY including reporting on the construction of the ironclad Monitor also from Fort Monroe. The fort at the southern tip of the Virginia peninsula remained under Union control throughout the war and was used as prison for captured Confederate soldiers and as a refuge for fugitive slaves. unknown books

Illustrated throughout. From story: Little Tommy sat on the doorsteps before his house one summer’s day and the hot sun streamed down over him in a flood. Tommy was very glad however to be so warm for he was just recovering from a long illness and was so pale and thin that the sun seemed only to put life and strength into him and to do him no harm whatever. The little boy was dressed in a suit of blue clothes just like those of a sailor with anchors of white braid on the shoulders with a large embroidered collar and with trousers very wide at the bottom. On his head was a wide-brimmed straw hat which surely was very unlike a sailor’s hat. Tommy however was not a sailor though there was no knowing what he might be later in life; as yet he had not launched his bark for a voyage of his own but had only been towed along in the wake of larger craft. In one chubby hand was carried a doll-like figure knitted from yarn stuffed with bran and adorned with fierce mustachios like a Spanish cavalier. This was Jock -- Tomy’s constant companion. The implication of both the authors' note and the physical make-up of the book is that the sheets less the publisher's prelims a substantial errata the 'Note' and the adverts are from an edition "roughly printed for our own and the actors' use." The text of the play was considerably revised when republished in 1918. Laid-in is a printed announcement for a production of "A Question of Memory" to take place at the "Opera Comique Strand W.C." under the direction of J.T. They lived openly as lovers. Bradley was associated with John Ruskin's utopian project Guild of St. George during her years at Cambridge. The couple died of cancer within eight months of each other. A handsome VG copy. 15 1 blank pp. Binder's blanks at rear of volume. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>The notorious quarrel between two of England's most popular authors began with Yates' critical review in Town Talk of Thackeray's English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century. Thackeray as might be expected was a bit affronted at what he viewed as a slanderous insult by this fellow member of the Garrick Club; believing much of Yates' information came from club meetings he took his grievance to the club committee. The committee sided with Thackeray and instructed Yates to apologize; Yates refused & was forcibly barred from club premises subsequently bringing charges against the club Secretary. Dickens absent from London as this brouhaha was brewing returned to find all in full force. He offered to mediate though primarily siding with Yates which Thackeray viewed as treachery. The ill feelings between the two did not abate for years until shortly before Thackeray's death in 1863. Herein Yates recounts the history & evidence of the disagreement with not unexpectedly a bias to his own case. This copy presented to Edward Bradley presumed to be the Victorian novelist who wrote under the pen name Cuthbert M. Bede. Known in Wise facsimiles cf Todd 425c the first edition as here just twice at auction in the last 30 years the last being 1977.
