Macchioline al titolo della seconda opera. Legatura coeva in papier dominoté dorso spaccato senza pagine bianche. 1-Luzac LE BONHEUR OU. Prima edizione. L'opera è stata a volte erroneamente anche attribuita a La Mettrie di cui Luzac era editore in Olanda. Ma in realtà era stato lo stesso Luzac a confutare l'opera di La Mettrie con L'Homme plus que machine. La raison la tolérance la modération et l'harmonie sont des valeurs centrales pour Luzac. Il fait partie du monde des Lumières modérées et à ce titre croit en la liberté intellectuelle et s'oppose à l'intolérance du clergé et à la répression gouvernementale. Raro. 2- Helvetius: LE BONHEUR. Edizione dell'anno seguente all'originale. Probabile contraffazione: nel 1773 le edizioni vere o pirata si susseguirono almeno cinque. « Les pages préliminaires sont occupées par un Essai sur la vie et les ouvrages d'Helvetius attribué à Duclos sans raison sérieuse et dont Saint-Lambert s'est déclaré par la suite être l'auteur. On le retrouve dans ses Oeuvres Philosophiques. Grimm en fait le plus grand éloge. » unknown

Pervasive damp stain at lower right corner of text block. Reference: Smith Bibliography of the writings of Helvetius B.4. <br /><br />A philosophical inquiry into happiness which Helvetius worked on sporadically during the last 30 years of his life. The line of reasoning accords remarkably well with recent studies of human happiness by "positive psychologists" such as Martin Seligman: happiness is a mental state independent of the things and places we seek it. The unfinished poem was published in a small edition with a long biographical preface six months after Helvetius died. No less than ten printings surfaced all of them with surreptitious imprints within a year of the initial publication. These have been elegantly sorted and exhaustively described by David Smith in the bibliography cited. Our copy was the fourth printing. [Dufour & Roux] hardcover

A bit of minor scattered brownspotting and some smaller dampstaining towards end. All in all a very nice copy. 4 III 1 151 pp. Beautiful woodcut vignettes. <br/><br/><em>Possibly first edition. One of three editions printed in 1774 none of which has been established as the true first. All three editions are printed in London but differ in number of pages the other two having 96 and 84 respectively ours having 151. This very interesting work of the French Enlightenment is probably not written by Helvetius but by whom is not known. It does stay within the controversial lines of the great Enlightenment philosophers though probably being the reson why the author has never been identified. It has a lot in common with d'Holbach's monumental "Système de la Nature" from 1770 which constitutes the main work of materialism and one of the most important works of natural philosophy. The work is a resumé of the Baron d'Holbach's â€Système De La Nature†but it has been suggested that the book is not written by Helvétius at all. hardcover

This magnum opus of modern thought is considered the founding work of modern Utilitarianism as it is here that Helvétius articulates the greatest happiness principle "the greatest happiness for the greatest number" for the first time and becomes the first to define social welfare upon this utilitarian maxim directly influencing Bentham and Mill.The materialistic philosophy of Helvétius' "De l'Esprit" also directly influenced Karl Marx who had studied the work while in Paris and called the ideas presented in it "the social basis of communism"."De l'Esprit" arguably constitutes the greatest "succès de scandale" of Western thought and one of the most influential works of Western philosophy. Helvètius continued the work of Condillac by reducing all human understanding to sensation or sense- perception. CONDITION: Very Good in full brown leather with with gilt titles and raised bands present to the spine. Boards have light wear present to the extremities of the boards especially corners. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid.
