'A study of five French thinkers and a school - friends disciples enemies — whose works evoke the image of a new age of prophecy. Tur-got Condorcet Saint-Simon and the Saint-Simonians Fourier and Comte form an unbroken chain of intellectual transmission from the Enlightenment through the first half of the nineteenth century. These men were crisis phil-osophers system-makers moralists magnificent obsessives intoxicated with the future. Mr. Manuel has combined psychological portraiture with philosophical and historical analysis. His fresh reading of underestimated thinkers is based on manuscripts as well as more familiar sources suggesting new insights. Historians of Marxism will be particularly interested in his interpretation of the social doctrines and philosophies of history; Freudians in his exploration of new attitudes toward love among the Saint-Simonians Fourier and Comte; scientists in his description of the imaginative projects of Turgot and Condorcet; students of the varieties of religious experience in his treatment of the Saint-Simonian cult and the Positivist religion. The book is written entirely in French. Leather covers with decorative gilt borders and gilt decorations on the spine; marbled end papers and marbling on all page edges. With a Table of Contents at the back of the book. Condorcet who denounced slavery was a French philosopher and mathematician. His ideas including support for a liberal economy free and equal public instruction constitutional government and equal rights for women and people of all races have been said to embody the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment and Enlightenment rationalism. In "Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind" originally published in 1795 he dealt with theoretical thought on perfecting the human mind and analyzing intellectual history based on social arithmetic. In "Reflections on Negro Slavery" originally published in 1781 he argued against slavery and introduced a program to gradually abolish it. Condorcet divides his work into ten époques tracing human history from the initial formation of societies through the development of agriculture the invention of writing the intellectual and scientific achievements of classical Greece the progress not uninterrupted of the sciences the invention of printing and the tense relationship between scientific progress and 'the yoke of authority'. Closing with two chapters on the period from Descartes until the French Revolution and on his expectations for future human progress Condorcet demonstrates his optimism: 'Our hopes for the future state of the human species can be reduced to these three important points: the destruction of inequality between nations; the progress of equality within nations; and finally the real perfection of humanity. Are not all nations bound one day to approach the state of civilisation reached by the most enlightened freest least prejudiced of peoples such as the French and the Anglo-Americans' p.328Concorcet's work was instantly popular with 1795 printings in Paris and Zürich; it was swiftly translated into English printed in both London and Philadephia and German Tübingen before Zatta in Venice published an Italian translation by Luigi Bossi in 1797.
