wenige Anstreichungen, leicht bestoßen und papierbedingt gebräunt, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand - „Wissen ist Macht“ - dieses Francis Bacon (1561-1626) zugeschriebene Motto begleitet die neuzeitliche Wissenschaft auf ihrem Siegeszug und flößt heute mehr Angst als Bewunderung ein. Aber wieviel vorsichtiger hatte Bacon sich ausgedrückt: Als „Diener und Interpret“ nur, der „der Natur gehorcht, kann der Mensch sie beherrschen“. Bacon sah sich umgeben von Philosophen, die sich mit Worten der stummen Natur überlegen fühlten, aber ihr doch ausgeliefert waren, weil sie nicht bereit waren, ihr Alphabet zu entziffern; und von Alchimisten, die die Natur und ihre Zuschauer überlisteten, anstatt aufzuklären. Gegen beide setzte Bacon eine neue Philosophie im Dienste der materiellen Wohlfahrt der Menschheit, ein Ziel, das eine neue Einstellung der Menschen zur Natur und zu sich selbst verlangt: Der Mensch muß die Natur erforschen und sich selbst als Forscher begreifen. Bacon, der Jurist und Staatsmann, verstand sein Reformwerk auch als Wissenschaftspolitik und ließ nichts unversucht, neue Forschungsinstitutionen zu gründen. Der Autor geht diesen Absichten ebenso nach wie den Beziehungen zwischen Bacons Hauptwerk, der „Instauratio Magna“, und der Gesellschaftsutopie „Neu-Atlantis“ sowie Bacons Auseinandersetzung mit der Alchimie, Magie und Rhetorik der Renaissance, Themen, die auch heute wieder diskutiert werden.
