This smallish utterly charming book published by Brentano's in 1895 uniquely contains eleven original watercolor illustrations by Bacon as evidenced by his initials on a number of the drawings. 18760008153<p>On offer is the working log and financial ledger of a sea captain in the Connecticut River and coastal trade moving coal and stone by water between the river towns of Connecticut and larger coastal markets.</p><p>The book belonged to Captain Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917. Captain C.H. Bacon was part of a lineage of New England sea captains whose coastal trade in raw materials laid the foundation for an expanding America transporting the stone and coal that built the booming New York metropolis. See biographical notes for more on the Bacon family.</p><p>For nearly 100 pages Bacon's log tracks almost two years of his workload as Master of schooners mainly the George Gillum which historical newspaper records show Bacon as Master for many parts of the years 1876-1879. A further 38 pages at the rear of the diary act as a ledger of the Captain's work-related debts and payments to local tugboats laborers and others providing further insight into the people and boats with whom he did business.</p><p>Capt. Bacon's meticulous record keeping allows researchers to trace his exact routes and the expenses associated with his work. For example on some days he would load up coal at Chappell's Dock in New London CT from FH. Chappell & Co. on the Thames and deliver to places like Gowanus Creek Red Hook and Harlem. He indicates stops at Portland Haddam and Maromas which were hubs for brownstone and granite quarries. He also references stops at other Eastern Seaboard hubs and ports such as Tottenville New London New Haven Wethersfield Rock Landing Essex and more.</p><p>The log is especially interesting for its repeated references to tugboat towing. Captain Bacon frequently notes when his schooner was taken in tow identifying the tug the route or location and the amount paid. He is frequently towed by the O.V. Coffin a steam tug built in 1870 in Philadelphia PA. but he also worked with dozens of other captains and vessels in towing his schooner to its destinations.</p><p>Some of the dozens of other vessels he names are Steam Tugs such as the <em>Admiral Farragut A.M. Smith J. Warren Coulston</em>. He similarly discusses many Steam Propellers such as the <em>General A.E. Burnside</em><em></em> which was owned by Thames Tow Boat and Co. and captained at the time by Roswell M. Waterman. Finally Capt. Bacon interacted frequently with other ship captains such as Master Richard L. Buell who at this time was master of the <em>Gleam</em><em></em> a Sloop built in Brookhaven New York. Wharfage $6.00</em>" Dec 4 1877</p><p>This would be a highly desirable addition to a collection focused on maritime archives the urban development of New York or the Northeast coasting trade during the Industrial Revolution offering a primary lens into the grit stone and everyday enterprise that literally built modern America.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> The book is leather-bound measures approx 5.75x3.5 inches and contains about 120 pages. It is 100% complete with the majority of the book being Bacon's daily log and embedded financial notes and the final 38 pages being a ledger of financial transitions where he lists debts to be paid and payment dates. The manuscript is written in pencil and is legible. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition with expected signs of age.</p><p><strong>Bio Notes: </strong>Charles Hubert Bacon 1843-1917 was born in Middletown Middlesex County Connecticut to parents Captain Charles Bacon 1815-1902 and Eunice Bridgham 1816-1851. His father was a sea captain for many years but by the 1870 census the senior Bacon had given up sailing for a life of farming which is how the young Cpt. Bacon was confirmed as the keeper of this log book.</p><p>In 1868 Capt C.H. Bacon married Adaline Annolia Bailey 1850-1930 and together they had at least seven children. One of their sons Cpt. Charles Russell Bacon 1871-1937 continued the family tradition of captaining ships on the river and after working his way up was best known for commanding the SS Hartford which ran between New York City and Hartford until 1931 when it was retired and scrapped.</p>

He was the author of the book History of the Revolution of the Basque Provinces and Navarra. 1833-1837 in which his experience in this period is narrated. He is also the author of the book entitled Six years in Biscay 1831-1837 where he narrates the sites of Bilbao during the First Carlist War. The book in its English edition contains a plan and four engravings of the town of Bilbao. There is a Spanish translation of Victor Luis de Gaminde from 1838. The First Carlist War was a civil war in Spain from 1833 to 1840 the first of three Carlist Wars. It was fought between two factions over the succession to the throne and the nature of the Spanish monarchy: the conservative supporters of the late king's brother Carlos de Borb¢n or Carlos V became known as Carlists carlistas while the progressive supporters of the regent Maria Christina acting for Isabella II of Spain were called Liberals liberales cristinos or isabelinos. Aside from being a war of succession about the question who the rightful successor to king Ferdinand VII of Spain was the Carlists' goal was the return to an absolute monarchy while the Liberals sought to defend the constitutional monarchy. George Washington Bacon 1830-1922 was an American publisher working in Britain. His first business failed and he declared bankruptcy in 1867 but reopened on the Strand in 1870 and built his house into one of the most successful in London. The map of Kensington spans from Paddington to the north and Fulham to the south and Hammersmith to the west and Green Park to the east. It prominently shows the Henry Lovibond & Son Cannon Brewery on the Lillie Road highlighted with red circles radiating from it in half mile increments with the first being a quarter mile in distance. Henry Lovibond c.1840-1910 was a brewer from Clerkenwell who acquired 'The Hermitage' villa and the remnants of its park on the corner of Lillie and North End Roads in 1867 and in the same year he built his Cannon's brewery there. Kensington was already an affluent borough after substantial redevelopment in the early nineteenth century but in recent decades it had become a cultural centre as well. The Great Exhibition took place in Hyde Park in 1851 and the cultural complex known as Albertopolis began to form: the South Kensington Museum & School now the Victoria & Albert Museum opened in 1857 the Natural History Museum in 1881 and in 1881 and the Royal Albert Hall in 1871. 18860008048Boonville NY. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting diary kept by a young woman in upstate New York in 1886. Measuring 5 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches the slim volume contains about 150 pages including memoranda. The diary portion is 100% complete. The covers binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Tucked into the diary are three newspaper clippings. These are obituaries published in the local papers. Two refer to the death of her mother in 1914. The third refers to a man who is possibly related to her by marriage. There are also 2 photographs in the diary - 1 is a family grouping and the other is a portrait of a young woman. Research confirms that the picture of the young woman is indeed Jennie Bacon. Interestingly in the same pocket that held the photographs was a folded paper package that contains a small calibre bullet casing. The flyleaf is inscribed "Jennie Bacon Layden NY Jan 4th 1886". Research establishes that she was born in 1870 in Iowa. Her family moved to Lewis County NY at some time in her early life. This makes her 16 when she began to keep this diary. She lives at home on a farm with her parents and her brother Arthur. Jennie Bacon passed away in 1949. The year opens with her attending a local school which she enjoys very much. Interspersed with her daily attendance are the many tasks that she carries out daily: "Pleasant and warm. Up at six. Washed the dishes and went to school. Had nearly all my lessons good. Knit some on my mittens. Got a certificate of vaccination today had a good time at school today. Pa went to Boonville and got the mechanic today" Jan 18 "Snowed and blowed late going to school this morning some drifts half way up the house sides. Up half past seven. Went to school had a very good time but way behind in my lessons. I wanted to stop History but Mr. Wadleigh would not let me. He lent me the history he had" Jan 21. Mid-march her schooling comes to an end and daily entries revolve mostly around the seemingly unending tasks of keeping the house: "Rained most all day. Up ten min past six. Went to school today and it is my last day this term. Felt very badly did not like to leave." Mar 19. ". Sarah and I have worked hard all day. We cleaned the parlour hall closet and cellar . I am very tired tonight" May 21. "Her entries describe cooking cleaning sewing and farm tasks such as milking making cheese and churning butter. ". Did the mornings work then I went to washing got it all out before dinner put away the wash things . ground coffee made biscuits hunted eggs sprinkled clothes in the evening set up my skirt again. I am sure tired tonight" Oct 11. This diary is very well-written and gives and excellent detailed account of the tasks and responsibilities of maintaining a home in rural America in the late 19th century. It is rich in detail. There are a great many references to local people and local places which can provide valuable cross-referencing. We can trace ten copies in institutions worldwide just one of those a presentation copy inscribed from the author's father see below. The little-known British poet Mary Ann Bacon fl. 1839-1870 d. 1875 was born into a family of writers editors and publishers. Her father was Richard Mackenzie Bacon 1776-1844 the proprietor of the Whig Norwich Mercury a leading provincial organ of liberal opinion. He was later joined in this venture by W. Kinnebrook and David Kinnebrook and his son Richard Noverre Bacon 1798-1884 - hence the imprint of the present title. A contributor to a vast array of publications particularly those with a focus on music Richard Mackenzie Bacon "wrote most of the usually unsigned pieces along with his daughters Louisa and Mary Ann. The latter like her father also contributed to the New Monthly Magazine he on music and she on French literature" entry in the Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century Journalism in Great Britain and Ireland p. 33. In later years the Mercury ran advertisements for his printing machine. Mary Ann's sister Louisa 1800-1885 later Louisa Barwell became a highly regarded musician and educational writer. Another sister Jane was a mezzo-soprano who studied in London and Paris. On her death in 1875 the Norfolk Annals remembered that Mary Ann "possessed varied accomplishments and poetical talent. Early in life she assisted her father by translating and writing several valuable articles for the 'Musical Review'; and she was associated with Mr. Owen Jones in the production of some volumes of combined art and poetry which attracted much attention at the time of their appearance. Miss Bacon was particularly happy in her metrical translations of German French and Italian songs and the books of the Norwich Festivals for many years attested her ready talent in giving the spirit of those languages when combined with music. She contributed many fugitive verses and serial tales in prose to the 'People's Journal' and other periodicals and magazines". She was also the author of several separately published works including Flowers and their Kind 1848 Fruits from the Garden 1850 and Winged Thoughts 1851. The Legend of St. Bernard a poem recounting the life of the 11th-century Italian monk Saint Bernard of Menthon has often been wrongly attributed or its author simply left anonymous. Library Hub and Library Hub trace ten copies. The four in the UK list no author: British Library Oxford National Trust Libraries at Sherringham Norfolk and National Library of Scotland. The other six are located in North America: the Library of Congress lists no author Cornell identifies the writer as Thomas Noon Talfourd 1795-1854 and the UCLA University of California and UC Davis Libraries Shields Library copies are catalogued under "M. A. Bacon" identified as Mary Ann with the note "Author from Bibliotheca Norfolciensis". The final copy at Stanford is firmly attributed to Mary Ann being inscribed thus: "Presented to J.S. Muskete Esq. as a slight token of long continued respect by the father of the authoress R.M. Bacon illegible Feb 24 1842". Cambridge University Library has a single-volume collection of her verses and translations in manuscript the works within variously dated between 1839 and 1870. The recipient of the present copy remains largely anonymous though the genealogy of the Bacon family suggests that they and the Howlett family may later have become linked through marriage. One record notes the marriage of a James Taylor of Hindolveston Norfolk a short distance north-west of Norwich to a Mary Ann Bacon b. 1823. Their son Thomas Bacon-Taylor married Frances Howlett Yaxham. The Mrs Howlett to whom this was gifted may have been an earlier relation. Octavo 226 x 140 mm. Leigh Hunt to title page his initials to front wrapper; in 1870 Hunt published a history of the town of Thetford in Norwich. Two volumes. <br/> Extremely pleasing contemporary crimson pebble-grain morocco covers with a double gilt rule surrounding a large scrolling central frame raised bands spine gilt in compartments with elaborate small tools radiating from floral centerpieces turn-ins gilt patterned endpapers all edges gilt. WITH A TOTAL OF 36 ENGRAVED PLATES 18 in each volume by William and Edward Finden and others as called for after sketches by Bacon and Captain Meadows Taylor. Joints just a bit rubbed at head and tail two small scratches to one cover corners with just a whisper of wear occasional faint offsetting from plates the faintest foxing or stains to a very few plates a bit of thumbing otherwise beautiful copies with only the most trivial of imperfections.<br/> <br/> These are handsomely bound and extraordinarily well-preserved copies of the final two volumes of a series inspired by the author's time on the Indian subcontinent. The son of a noted sculptor Thomas Bacon 1813-92 was a talented artist whose service in the Bengal Horse Artillery furnished him with endless fascinating and "exotic" subjects for his sketches and drawings. In 1837 he published "First Impressions and studies from nature in Hindostan" which found an appreciative audience at a time when illustrated travelogues were much in vogue. He produced illustrations for Wilson's "Oriental Portfolio" and for the present "Oriental Annual" which had brought stories and views of the Far East to the British public beginning in 1834. In the 1839 edition Bacon and his very able engravers the Finden brothers present dramatic scenes of the seas around Tenerife and of the peaks of the Himalayas along with wonderfully detailed depictions of "monumental architecture" including temples tombs and military installations. For the 1840 volume Bacon collaborated with his friend Captain Philip Meadows Taylor 1808-76 a longtime British administrator with extensive knowledge of the region. There is more focus on cities in this volume and the authors recount both legends and historical facts to set the scene. The plates include a portrait of the emperor of Delhi but focus on city views and fine architecture. Produced when William 1787-1852 and Edward 1791-1857 Finden were in an extended period at the top of their craft the plates here are characterized by the great delicacy of detail sophisticated gradation of light and rich texture of surface for which they were known. While volumes from this periodical series appear on the market regularly they are rarely so finely bound and in such remarkable condition as the present pair.
