The most prominent modern creator of illuminated manuscripts our artist Alberto Sangorski 1862-1932 started his professional life as secretary to a goldsmith's firm before being attracted to the book arts at the age of 43. He began doing illuminated manuscripts that were then bound by his brother Francis' firm Sangorski & Sutcliffe with the colophon crediting the manuscript to the firm rather than acknowledging Alberto's contribution. Partly because of this failure to recognize his work Alberto had a falling out with Francis sometime around 1910 at which time he took his talents to Riviere the chief competitor to his brother's bindery. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. Riviere was happy to allow Albert to add a colophon proclaiming as here that "This manuscript . . . was designed written out and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski." The decoration in the present work has an airy light-hearted aura with the bright gold lettering the delicate intricate penwork and the whimsical fairies conveying considerable joy and playfulness. And the beauty of the manuscript is heightened by the extremely fine condition here. Especially written out and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski unknown

FIRST EDITION OF BACON'S MOST REVEALING BOOK AN ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BACON ON HALF-TITLE: "For Erica Spender / with all my best wishes / Francis Bacon". Through Bacon's responses to the influential art critic and Bacon scholar David Sylvester's provocative questions we gain invaluable insight into the one of the greatest artistic minds of the twentieth century.<br /> <br /> An important association copy:<br /> <br /> This copy was given by Bacon to Erica Erika Haarman Spender. Erica Spender was the widow of Michael Spender 1906-1945 and sister-in-law of the poet Stephen Spender. Stephen Spender was a prominent figure in Francis Bacon's circle and Erica Spender was first introduced to Francis Bacon by him.<br /> <br /> Erica Spender later joined Marlborough Fine Art in London to run its the Antiquarian Book Department. At that time Francis Bacon was represented by Marlborough Fine Art and it was during this period that Erica Spender became Bacon's friend sharing a commonality of cultural artistic and philosophical interests. Bacon was represented by Marlborough Fine Art from 1958 until his death in 1992. The relationship was greatly beneficial to Bacon as Marlborough worked closely with the artist to successfully enhance his international reputation.<br /> <br /> Complete with 94 black-and-white illustrations. 19348376London: J. Weiner for Roadway Publications 1934. Quad royal station wall map 101.5 x 127 cms 40 x 50 inches printed in colours blank verso; an extremely detailed map of central London published for display in stations across the Underground network. The first edition of this map was printed in 1932 but the introduction of Beck's diagram in 1933 did not obviate the need for geographically accurate maps which pinpointed the location of Undergound stations in the central area in relation to the surface topography. The lines themselves though colour-coded are given minimal prominence so as not to disrupt the street plan. The red discs denoting stations are in the style of the earliest roundels introduced in 1908 and superseded by the modern bar and circle bullseye in 1917. In the context of this map even in minute form they prove a highly effective means of drawing the eye to the stations without intruding greatly on the surrounding cartography. The map was printed under licence from G.W. Bacon & Co Ltd a firm noted for its large-scale mapping of London whether in the form of folding maps or the detailed Atlases of London and Suburbs published from the 1880s onwards. Map J. Weiner for Roadway Publications, unknown

1964102743London: Methuen 1964. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated work on Francis Bacon. Octavo original boards illustrated throughout. Presentation copy boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper "For George with all best wishes Francis Bacon." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph of Bacon on the front panel by Cecil Beaton. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes crucifixions and portraits of close friends his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth set against flat nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series" and his work which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures the 1950s screaming popes the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures the early 1960s crucifixions the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends the 1970s self-portraits and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. From the mid-1960s he mainly produced portraits of friends and drinking companions either as single or triptych panels. Following the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971 his art became more sombre inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. The climax of this later period is marked by masterpieces including his 1982's "Study for Self-Portrait" and Study for a Self-Portrait--Triptych 1985-86. Methuen hardcover books

1941397729Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1941. Hardcover. Very Good. Small black three-ring binder. Quarto. Binding is very good with wear to the edges and the bottom front joints starting. Contents very good with reading wear at the ring holes and some modest toning and offsetting. Contains roughly 350 densely-typed pages both recto and verso with occasional ephemera mounted throughout. More than 150000 words and appears complete. An extraordinary vernacular history of the outbreak of World War II. Though the title page suggests a diary covering only a brief period the project seems to have quickly outgrown Bacon's original intentions. From the German invasion of Poland September 1 1939 through the bombing of Pearl Harbor for more than two years Bacon records the latest news and developments from Europe and elsewhere.<br /> Summarizing and sometimes transcribing both radio reports and newspaper headlines Bacon writes clearly and with a strong narrative often deftly juggling multiple developments throughout the world. Bacon’s father appears to have been a prominent Quaker from the Philadelphia area which may account for his obsession with the war. He attended Haverford College from 1920-23. Curiously the Haverford yearbook contains this remembrance of Bacon: "By no means the least marvelous of his accomplishments is his uncanny ability to sit down at a typewriter and tear off unlimited numbers of theses at the terrific rate of nearly a thousand words per hour."<br /> <br /> An intriguing day-to-day account of the war by a Philadelphia pacifist. hardcover

Armstrong is an eminent Australian philosopher whose work over many years has dealt with such subjects as: the nature of possibility concepts of the particular and the general causes and laws of nature and the nature of human consciousness. This collection of essays all specially written for this volume explores the many facets of Armstrong's work concentrating on his more recent interests. There are four sections to the book: possibility and identity universals laws and causality and philosophy of mind. The contributors comprise an international group of philosophers from the United States England and Australia. An interesting feature of the volume is that Armstrong himself has written responses to each of the essays. There is also a complete bibliography of Armstrong's writings. This volume will be essential reading for metaphysicians and philosophers of mind as well as for epistemologists and philosophers of science.
