Bookplate of Charles James Fox the noted statesman orator and indulger "in vicious pleasures".<br /> Gibson 245 points out that as with this copy many copies lack the two dedication pages which were canceled owing to the death of William III before the publication pf the work. This copy with the early ownership signatures of Philip Ward and "Edw. Ward ex dono Robt. Stephens" and with an inscription by Stephens on the flyleaf reading "To the Right Honable. Sir Edward Ward Kt. Lord Chief Baron of the Court of Excheq. the memoires of Ld. Baron's are presented by his Ldships most humble servant Rob: Stephens." Edward Ward 1638-1714 was Chief Baron of the Exchequer and Robert Stephens 1665-1732 was the historiographer-royal and editor of this volume of letters by Bacon. In the middle of the 19th century there was a taste for humor with issues of Punch and in books by Lewis Carroll and Gilbert A Beckett which often had symbolical or allegorical overtones. The puns in this volume often bring a hidden delight along with the ten etched engravings by John Leech all of which are hand colored. Cicero Denouncing Cataline is issued as a frontispiece instead of at the end of the book. Bound in 3/4 red polished calf over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers all edges marbled raised bands with lettering gilt and compartments fully gilt decorated edges rubbed. Good. First Complete Collected edition in English many of the letters were not inserted in the 1730 printing and "some never before published. . . " The biography by Mallet is also new. Dedicated to Dr. Richard Mead. Bacon’s "insistence on making science experimental and factual rather than speculative and philosophical had powerful consequences. He saw clearly the limitations of Aristotelian and scholastic methods". Bacon’s influence on Locke and through him on subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics was profound.
