16183463London: Bonham Norton and John Bill 1618. Rare first edition first issue of the defense of James Is execution of Sir Walter Raleigh written by Francis Bacon and with according to Bacon very material additions by the king himself. The work describes the circumstances surrounding Raleighs final voyage to America in 1618 with the purpose of locating a fabled gold mine and includes the text of Raleighs commission. In the event his expedition ended up seizing the island of St. Thomas and killing its Spanish governor an ostensible act of war against Englands ally. Back in England Raleigh who had already been sentenced to death in 1603 on another conviction was tried by a commission headed by Bacon and executed in October 1618. The English public was appalled: To sacrifice to a concealed enemy of England the life of the only man in the nation who had a high reputation for valor and military experience was regarded as meanness and indiscretion and the intimate connections which the king was now entering into with Spain being universally distasteful rendered this proof of his complaisance still more invidious and unpopular David Hume History of England. The present volume is the governments hasty attempt to justify the execution. Bacon as a member of the council that had sentenced Raleigh appears to have been the main author. In a letter to a friend he mentioned the work and the kings input: We have put the Declaration touching Raleigh to press with his Majestys additions which were very material and fit to proceed from his Majesty cf. Pforzheimer 819. The work is known in at least two issues a first issue of 63 pages and a second of 68. STC and Pforzheimer originally took the present to be the second issue but the STC has since revised its opinion based on the research by Starkey published in his Library article of 1948. The case of Peirce & Bacon Boston merchants revolves around drafts drawn on the Department of War for money due the freighters Russell Majors and Wadell the major firm freighting government supplies to New Mexico and Utah in the 1850's. Peirce & Bacon purchased a total of $260000 worth of these drafts what they believed to be "first class paper" backed by the "pledged faith and well known laws of the Government." The bankruptcy of the shipping firm threw the value of the paper into doubt. After submitting the drafts for payment and receiving no payments after eighteen months Peirce & Bacon appealed to Congress. This pamphlet sets forth their side of the case. unknown books

Good or so. <br/><br/> The firm Russell Majors and Waddell contracted with the War Department in 1860 "for the transportation of military stores and supplies to the army then occupying Utah and New Mexico." War Secretary John Floyd soon to desert to the Confederacy accepted drafts drawn by the firm "thus solemnly acknowledging the indebtedness of the United States to the drawers for the amounts so accepted." Peirce and Bacon purchased these drafts and sought payment from the United States but the government has rebuffed them. The five volume set printed by Luke White in Dublin in 1793 and the Appendix volumes printed by White in 1801. Each of the seven volumes with the signature of Philip Lightfoot -- perhaps the same Lightfoot of Culpeper County who served in the Continental Army Artillery from 1778-1781 and was a prominent lawyer and merchant the little town of Lightfoot Virginia near Williamsburg bears his name . The volumes also have the name of another Culpeper lawyer James French Strother. Uniformly bound in contemporary calf with a decorative roll in blind to the perimeters of each board and morocco labels minor loss to one label. Numbers are stamped in blind. Very Good binding. Expertly bound to style in half russia over early marbled paper covered boards spine with raised bands in seven compartments morocco lettering piece in the second the others with a repeat decoration in gilt.<br/> <br/>Provenance: John Purviance early signature on title<br/> <br/>The most important legal publication in colonial Maryland and among the finest examples of typography of any publication done on an American colonial press.<br/> <br/>Bacon rector of All-Saints Parish in Frederick County and domestic chaplain in Maryland to the Right Honorable Frederick Lord Baltimore worked on compiling these laws for thirteen years and publication took another four. Considered the most important legal work published in the colony it is noted for its typography and the first appearance of the seal of Maryland on the title. An entire chapter is devoted to this work in Lawrence C. Wroth's A History of Printing in Colonial Maryland who writes: "In scholarly and systematic arrangement as well as in accuracy and completeness it excelled any of the former bodies of law which the Province had possessed . He is caught his sister is sent to an orphanage and he never sees her again and unfortunately for him the grocery store also housed a post office making the crime a federal offense. He is sent to Alcatraz where he attempts escape and is foiled by a fellow inmate leaving him sentenced to solitary confinement in the basement of the island prison. Upon his release he has a psychotic episode in which he stabs his betrayer to death with a spoon. James Stamphill Slater is to defend him alleging that Alcatraz drove him insane. <br/><br/>Red titled wrappers.
