8vo., with decorative title and pictorial endpapers; early series binding of maroon full leatherette, upper board blocked in gilt, gilt back, gilt top, radial corners, ribbon marker, backstrip chipped at tail else a very good, bright, clean copy. The most elaborate of the four original binding styles, full leatherette was introduced at the commencement of the series and discontinued around 1919 (see Seymour pp.103). Due to the delicate nature of the material, really bright, crisp copies are now genuinely elusive. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. EL 10; Seymour 46.0.

8vo., First Edition thus; original series de luxe binding of full maroon leatherette, upper board elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt to an art deco design, back gilt extra, gilt top, radial corners, pictorial endpapers, marker ribbon, a near fine copy. SOLE APPEARANCE THUS IN EVERYMAN. The EL full leatherette binding (1906-c.1917) faithfully reflects the art deco movement of the period. By far the most elegant of all the EL series bindings, it is notoriously fragile and seldom found in bright, sound state as here. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. EL 10; Seymour 46.0.

Still a fairly clean, wide margined copy of this interesting work which was published over the space of a decade. This Second Edition was printed from the same type used for the first edition - Gaskell. First Editions of William Mason, 14n. William Mason (1725-1797) was an English poet, editor and gardener. Born in Hull, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge. After his ordination in 1754 he held a number of posts in the church. The English Garden is especially interesting as it uses famous English authors to illustrate his ideas of garden practice. The standard history of the legendary naval force, charged with safeguarding the Channel throughout WWI. Written by the commander who led it during most of the critical period of the war, but who was superseded for political reasons before the great operations he had planned (the mine-barrage and the attack on Zeebrugge) could come to fruition.
