Between 1843 and 1850 Kierkegaard published numerous works under the title of "Edifying Discourses" inviting 'that single individual my reader' to dwell with a biblical passage for the sake of building up faith. 6 parts in 1 vol. as issued octavo 199 x 125 mm. Recent black half sheep spine lettered in gilt mottled paper sides. Binding fine; contents lightly toned and occasionally spotted 2.5 cm closed tear to fifth part pp. 55/6. A very good copy. The work constitutes Kierkegaard's religious works which supplement his theological and philosophical ones.The first upbuilding discourses were published the same year as Either-Or and it is interesting to note that in opposition to his major philosophical works the religious upbuilding discourses actually bear the name of the author on the title-page a fact that was by no means incidental. Front free end-paper with the ownership-inscription of Michael Bentzon and his acquisition date of 1855 the same year that Kierkegaard died. Some brownspotting here and there and the first couple of leaves of "To opbyggelige Taler 1844" with a damp stain. Neat underlinings in the text as well as several marginalia mostly in pencil. A very good copy indeed. Il reproche à Andersen de n’avoir aucune conception de la vie. Une conception de la vie est tout autre chose en effet qu’une somme d’idées abstraites ; elle ne saurait davantage se confondre avec l’expérience individuelle, qui reste toujours fragmentaire et particulière. Elle doit la sublîmer... Andersen a tort de considérer la superstition comme un succédané de la poésie véritable, et c’est une superstition insupportable de croire que l’adversité peut opprimer le génie et faire qu’un grand musicien périsse dans la peau d’un violoneux misérable Le génie n’est pas une flamme de chandelle que le vent souffle, mais un incendie que la tempête attise. Andersen répondit à ce violent réquisitoire avec une Comédie à la campagne jouée contre sa volonté. À vrai dire, il n’a pas les rieurs de son côté. Tout au contraire, on témoigne beaucoup d’intérêt à son adversaire (...) Peut-être pressent-on aussi que cet opuscule du jeune étudiant laisse prévoir l’isolement de son propre génie.” M.
