AN IMMACULATE COPY.<br/> <br/> This is a lovely bibliophile's edition of de Musset's philosophical tale of an outcast blackbird illustrated by a leading painter of birds printed for a distinguished collector including a bonus set of plates made for the publisher and beautifully bound--with especially charming doublures--by one of the leading workshops in Paris. A pioneer of the Romantic movement in France de Musset 1810-57 expresses some of his pain over his doomed affair with novelist George Sand in this examination of rejection and "otherness" narrated by a sensitive blackbird who is scorned for his white feathers. The delicate illustrations by Hector Giacomelli 1822-1904 capture both the beauty of belonging especially in the original watercolor frontispiece and the melancholy of separation. These were among the artist's final works. Son and successor to Émile Mercier Georges 1885-1939 graduated first in his class at École Éstienne institute for decorative arts before joining his father's firm; he took over the workshop on his father's death in 1910 and continued the business for the rest of his life. Flety says he knew his craft perfectly and continued the fine tradition of his father whom Prideaux considered the best finisher of his day. Here Mercier has combined delicate inlays and gilt tooling with sculpted and painted doublures inspired by Giacomelli's illustrations. This sumptuous volume has a circular connection to two of France's most discriminating bibliophiles. First it was issued by the bookseller publisher and bibliographer Leopold Carteret 1873-1948 who both produced and collected significant illustrated books. And then it was owned by René Descamps-Scrive d. 1925 who collected beautiful bindings that typified major styles and periods and who was known for his insistence on only acquiring volumes in perfect condition. Finally Carteret catalogued and sold Descamps-Scrive's library after his death. In his renowned bibliography of modern illustrated books Carteret describes this book as "a charming publication especially on Large Paper" as here with "the best illustrations by the painter of birds.". Spine slightly darkened joints with very minor wear at head nicely masked with dye a couple of trivial finger smudges to the generous margins but A FINE COPY clean fresh and bright internally in a scarcely worn lustrous binding.<br/> <br/> This is a lovely connoisseur's copy of De Musset's satire on worldly clerics that is printed on smooth paper features wide margins and charming vignettes and best of all is adorned with a beautiful binding by the highly esteemed Pétrus Ruban. Bibliophile Octave Uzanne praised Ruban 1851-1929 for taking inspiration from everything around him--flowers birds architecture--and for his facility with colors. He became quite a fashionable binder and mostly worked for the great collectors of the day among them Beraldi Baudin Granjon de l'Espinay and Romagnol. Flety notes that "with a fertile imagination he practices all genres of binding with equal felicity"--a talent that is here directed at evoking the elegant French bindings of the 18th century. Ruban won silver medals at the Palace of Industry and at the Universal Exposition in 1889 with judges at the latter praising his careful study of both historic master binders and modern artists noting that Ruban would "soon achieve the rank he so rightly seeks." He was named an officer of the academy in 1902. First published in "Revue des Deux Mondes" in 1840 this present novella follows the fortunes of a young man who pretends to be an abbé in the glory days of the French ancien régime. Although literally meaning "abbot" the word "abbé" was a term applied to priests usually young who were not affiliated with any church or religious order but acted as free-lance spiritual advisors to the rich and influential. Such men led a life of ease frequenting salons visiting country estates and being showered with gifts by grateful society women. Our hero Cordier "had never opened a breviary" but made a very good life for himself in this role--until the Revolution brought it all crashing to the ground. Alone and impoverished Cordier is rescued in his final years by a bequest from an actress to whom he had giving spiritual and carnal succor. Author Paul de Musset 1804-80 was the elder brother of Romantic writer Alfred de Musset. Though often overshadowed by his more famous brother Paul wrote several works of his own including "Lui et Elle" a response to Georges Sand's "Elle et Lui" regarding her tumultuous affair with brother Alfred. Our artist Lalauze 1838-1906 was a major figure in what Ray describes as a revival of etching as an art form in France. This revival was partly stimulated by the founding of an etcher's society and the renewed interest was carried into book illustration by a number of publishers who specialized in sumptuous editions like the present one. A PRISTINE COPY inside and out.<br/> <br/> This exquisite little volume containing the final works of famed Romantic poet Musset features a wonderfully elaborate fanfare-style binding by Smeers. Alfred de Musset 1810-57 was still in his teens when he began publishing his popular tales and he found success in poetry fiction and drama. He is generally recognized with Hugo Vigny and Lamartine as one of the four great French Romantic writers while at the same time being known for his tortured and tortuous love affair with novelist George Sand. This posthumous collection of works includes: poetry and unfinished plays; the complete play “L'ane et le Ruisseau;†and a selection of letters to friends and family from over a 30-year period. This was the 10th volume in a collected edition of Musset issued by Lemerre who was known for his publications of poetry. Our copy was bound by Isidore Smeers 1834-96 a Belgian whose career in Paris spanned 25 years beginning in 1865. He distinguished himself among the leading binders of the day especially through the notable work he did for the publishing house of Firmin-Didot. This binding with its profuse and delicate tooling perfectly demonstrates the finesse for which his volumes are known. With little to go on we have been unable to identify for whom this custom binding was executed. The two sets of initials in the central cypher suggest the binding may have been done for a couple; perhaps this book thoroughly beautiful inside and out was given as a romantic gift. Bourgoing occupa des fonctions diplomatiques en Espagne pendant la Révolution puis en Saxe sous Napoléon. Joli exemplaire bien conservé.
