Bookplate of the English Army officer and peer Edward George Bootle-Wilbraham 2nd Earl of Lathom 1864-1910 to the front paste down. Maria Louise Ramé 1839-1908 known by the pseudonym Ouida was a successful English novelist. She wrote more than 40 novels as well as short stories children's books and essays. In this novella a Northern European dissident is exiled to an Italian community of thieves and squatters in which he finds companionship with a local peasant woman. In a quarter calf binding. Externally generally smart though faded to the boards with rubbing to the joints and spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for spotting to the first and last few pages.
