Di ogni film il dizionario fornisce, oltre ai dati filmografici (titolo originale, paese di produzione, anno di uscita, regista, principali interpreti e durata), una sintesi della trama, una concisa analisi critica e suggerimenti sulla opportunità di visione per spettatori di minore età (che non sempre tengono conto delle indicazioni delle commissioni di censura). Per ogni scheda inoltre, oltre al giudizio della critica, si trova l'indicazione del successo di pubblico. Degli oltre 22 000 film schedati circa un migliaio, di grande successo di critica e/o di pubblico i "Migliori" - a giudizio degli autori sono riepilogati, per anni, in una appendice.
