Bound in decorative red blind stamped cloth with gilt to the spine and all edges gilt. Old bookshop label of 'Lacy Theatrical Bookseller 89 Strand London' on the first yellow pastedown. Thomas Hailes Lacy was a bookseller and publisher who later went into partnership with Samuel French. Each play has its own title page and frontispiece by Robert Cruikshank. Tear to bottom edge of final yellow endpaper where it has adhered and pulled away from final pastedown. An uncommon collection which was issued in various formats. 1870005740New York: D. & J. Sadlier & Co. 1870. Irish authors Michael Banim 1796-1874 and his brother/collaborator John 1798-1842 first published their works anonymously as "The O'Hara Family." Although very popular during the 19th Century their works are rather uncommon today. These two novels were first published in 1825. This is a Very Good copy of a Later printing part of a set; there is no publication date but dates from the 1870s. Green cloth binding ruled and decoratively stamped on the front cover; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; "Peep" goes to page 187; "Crohoore" continues to page 412. William Carleton and "The O'Hara Family" pseudonyms of John and Michael Banim are recognized as the first Irish authors that came from the Roman Catholic side rather than from the Protestant Ascendency. Here is a Very Good copy of an edition combining the Banim's first story from 1825 with a First Edition printing of one of Carleton's most popular books. Scarce. Marbled paper-covered boards with smooth leather spine and tips. Four raised bands on the spine with gilt ruling; black label with gilt titling. Clean texts; viii 309 pages and 318 pages. There is a contemporary bookseller's label on the front paste-down. The FFEP bears a signature; one corner of the page has been torn off. Rubbed at the margins. The text is clear and supple with occasional tanning; some staining to the paste-downs which are of an interesting plaid design. The signal intent of the expedition commissioned by the state of Victoria's worthies on a whim in the spirit of sporting endeavor rather than scientific exploration was to compete with the ambitions of South Australian explorer John McDouall Stuart to be the first to traverse the Australian continent from South to North. The party consisted of three officers: Burke Landells the camel-master and William John Wills surveyor and meteorologist; two German scientific officers Ludwig Becker naturalist and Herman Beckler medical officer and botanist; a foreman and nine assistants and the camel-drivers. The expedition left Melbourne on 20 August 1860 and made a stately progress through the settled districts to Swan Hill and Balranald and reached Menindee on the Darling at the beginning of October. The march to the gulf was made in extraordinarily favourable conditions after a season of heavy rain. Charles Sturt's Stony Desert was like a garden full of lily ponds and Burke's expedition in this also unique was never short of water and was able to travel in an almost straight line to its objective without losing time searching for water. Even so it took four months to do the 1500 miles. They walked from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. with only a single day of rest in the whole period and were half-starving in the fourth month"""" Kathleen Fitzpatrick.
