A scarce three volume collection of novels by one of the most provocative French figures of the fin-de-siecle. Sibylle Aimée Marie-Antoinette Gabrielle de Riquetti de Mirabeau Comtesse de Martel de Janville was a French writer who adopted the male nom de plume Gyp under which she published over one hundred novels yet stated she took no pleasure form writing. Gyp wrote humorous novels and sketches which brazenly denounced her own fashionable society as well as the French republic's political class on top of this she was a fanatical anti-semite. Due to her unpopular opinions many attempts were made on her life including a sensational kidnapping. Miquette and Monsieur De Folleuil are made up of of dialogue between characters and this genre of satirical dialogue-novels was named "one of the happiest forms" by Henry James. In French. In a quarter calf binding. Externally sound with some marks to board and rubbing to corners and wear to heads of spines. Backstrips of La Paix and Folleuil are lifting. 18895350Paris: Calmann Lévy 1889. First edition. A very nice copy of this dialogue adorned with a large number of full page caricatures throughout. All in the fin de siécle / art nouveau style. Attractive unsigned half leather binding with titles and gilt decorations to the spine. Marbled boards. A little rubbing to the spine and corners but sound. Fractional loss to the surface leather at the head of the spine. Lovely hand made marbled end papers. Original pale green paper covers are bound in. These have slight foxing to the edges. Although not stated this is possibly a large paper copy as the text pages are mostly a little larger about 1cm extra to compared to the illustration plates. The pages and plates are a little darkened to the edge but still attractive. vi 120 pages. 23cm x 17.5cm. Gyp / Bob were the pen names of Sibylle Gabrielle Riquetti de Mirabeau 1849-1932 a French writer satirist and caricaturist active during the Belle Époque and the Third Republic. Her writings were marked by strong anti-republican nationalist and antisemitic views and she was an outspoken supporter of General Boulanger and an anti-Dreyfusard. Her political stance led her to state her profession as "anti-Semite" during a court case rather than "writer." She was famous in Parisian society hosting a well-known salon attended by prominent artists and intellectuals such as Marcel Proust and Edgar Degas. Despite her literary success she faced financial difficulties and several personal threats including assassination attempts and a kidnapping. .
