1949148442Pennsylvania: New Directions 1949. First edition of this seminal work of Italian literature. Octavo original cloth. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Introduction by Ernest Hemingway. Translated by Wilfrid David. In Sicily Conversazione in Sicilia written by Elio Vittorini and first published in 1941 is a seminal work of Italian literature blending existentialist and neorealist themes. Set during the fascist era in Italy the novel follows the journey of Silvestro Ferrauto a disillusioned typographer as he travels from northern Italy to his native Sicily. This journey becomes both a physical and metaphorical exploration of identity alienation and the socio-political struggles of ordinary people. Structured as a series of dialogues and encounters the narrative employs symbolic language and surrealist elements to address issues of oppression poverty and human suffering under authoritarian rule. Silvestro’s interactions with his mother and the Sicilian villagers serve as poignant reflections on the resilience and dignity of those marginalized by society. New Directions hardcover
