Notes: Ernest Hemingway Selected Letters 1917–1961 is a book composed of letters to and from Ernest Hemingway found at his Cuban home after his death edited by Hemingway biographer Carlos Baker. Hemingway was a prolific correspondent and in 1981 many of his letters were published by Scribner's in the volume. Although Hemingway wrote to his executors in 1958 asking that his letters not be published in 1979 his wife Mary Hemingway made the decision to have the letters published.<br><br>Ernest Miller Hemingway 1899 – 1961 was an American journalist novelist short-story writer and sportsman. His economical and understated style—which he termed the iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels six short-story collections and two nonfiction works. Three of his novels four short-story collections and three nonfiction works were published posthumously. It is generally acknowledged that Ernest Hemingway's short stint as a reporter for the Kansas City Star was an important apprenticeship to his career as a creative writer. In his articles for the Kansas City Star Hemingway wrote of a gun battle outside a house used by drug addicts of the victims of violence that were treated at the city’s General Hospital and of the violence accompanying the laundry workers’ strike. He also did some serious investigative journalism into corruption on the hospital’s Health Board and criticised the city for its mishandling of the smallpox outbreak that was happening at the time.This slender volume is a collection of eleven Kansas City Star stories that editor Matthew Bruccoli has been able to attribute to Hemingway. Black and white vintage gelatin silver print of Hemingway pointing towards the distance with one arm and the other wrapped around Martha Gellhorn. Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway in black ballpoint to the middle left "For Taylor my pal Ernie." Inscribed above by Martha Gellhorn "For Taylor - Love Marty." The recipient was Hemingway’s great friend Taylor “Beartracks†Williams the well-known Sun Valley hunting and fishing guide. Hemingway’s friendship with Williams dated back to their meeting in Idaho in the late 1930s after which Hemingway frequently returned to Ketchum before eventually settling there. Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn met in December 1936 and soon began working alongside one another as correspondents traveling to Spain in 1937 to report on the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. At the time still married to his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer Hemingway divorced in 1939 the same year he and Gellhorn first visited Ketchum; they married the following year. During this period Gellhorn filed reports from Spain for Collier’s while Hemingway published For Whom the Bell Tolls 1940 a novel partly written in Ketchum and illustrated on its dust jacket with a photograph of him at his typewriter taken there. In 1941 the couple traveled to China on assignment for Collier’s and returned again to Ketchum before their marriage ended in divorce in 1945. In near fine condition with with light creasing to the extremities. Triple matted and framed. The photograph measures 9.375 inches by 9.375 inches. The entire piece measures 16.5 inches by 16.5 inches. It goes on to provide a long italicized quote from the letter in which Hemingway describes the printings of his early books from Three Stories and Ten Poems through the forthcoming Men Without Women 1927. The quote reads in part: ".The books have been Three Stories and Ten Poems Contact Press 1953-350 copies out of print In Our Times Three Mountains Press 1924 150 I think.They claim to be issuing a new edition. Then Scribners published The Torrents of Spring in the spring of 1926 in an unrestrained edition and The Sun Also Rises came out in the same year with I believe an attempt made to print and sell as many as possible.I own one copy of Three Stories and Ten Poems and would be very happy if it became valuable in order that I might have something to leave to my children." Signed by Hemingway in he lower right corner of the pamphlet. In fine condition. Double matted and framed with a portrait of Hemingway. The entire piece measures 26 inches by 17 inches.
