1871WRCAM43342Paris 1871. Handcolored lithograph 13 1/2 x 9 inches matted to 19 x 14 inches. A few light spots of foxing in margin but image quite bright and clean; a few small scuffs to uniform. Very good plus. Plate from Jules Renard Draner's series of caricatures entitled TYPES MILITAIRES: GALERIE MILITAIRE DE TOUTES LES NATIONS published from 1862 to 1871. Draner - which was his nom de plume - was a Belgian artist who settled in Paris. Though he undertook a career as a businessman he never lost his zeal for drawing and caricature and in the 1860s he undertook to satirize the world's zest for military pomp with a series of 136 color lithographs depicting various military uniforms from around the world including ten plates showing American uniforms. Though his drawings were executed with an eye toward entertainment and caricature each shows accurate military dress down to appropriate use of feathers and buttons. This image shows a portly artilleryman presumably a German settler in Missouri decked out in a blue uniform with red trims holding a plate in one hand and a fork in the other. He is in New Orleans as indicated by a poster behind him evidently as part of occupying troops during the Civil War. He directs a horrified look at the bits of red food on his plate and fork perhaps intended to be some sort of foreign or New Orleans delicacy. Quite nice and highly displayable. COLAS 891. Jules Renard 1813-1877 was a French playwright and vaudevillist not to be confused with the later Jules Renard 1864-1910 who is known for his Journals. A sammelband of ten first editions of his vaudeville comedies in one act all published by A. Dentu Paris between 1863-1872. Bound in contemporary pebbled morocco gilt lettering and rules back with all ten titles in miniature marbled end papers. Near Fine small rubs at spine ends and corners two of the plays with stamp of "Unis et Libres Societe des Auteurs" at title page. The plays are 1. Un Monsieur qui a Perdu Son Mot 1863 36 pp. 2. Hardcover. book is lightly worn with a touch of dust-soiling and faint spotting on the top edge of the text block; the jacket alas is badly compromised due to a large chunk having been torn away from the top left corner of the front panel taking with it about half of the title. "Body horror" novel about the psychological havoc wrought upon a famous pianist when his hands mangled in an accident are surgically replaced by those of a recently-executed murderer. Originally published in France in 1920 the novel was first filmed as a 1924 silent in Austria directed by Robert Wiene of "Caligari" fame; subsequent movie versions acknowledging the source novel were MAD LOVE 1935 starring Colin Clive and Peter Lorre and THE HANDS OF ORLAC 1960 with Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee. It was also unofficially remade without source attribution as HANDS OF A STRANGER 1962 and is often acknowledged as an inspiration for the 1946 thriller THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS. Rare in the dust jacket this example of which apart from the noted large missing piece is virtually unworn and is a great candidate for professional restoration. Alternatively one could take the much less expensive approach of obtaining a beautiful facsimile of the original jacket from the well-known purveyor of such things; details upon request. . E.P. A highly decorative sea chart of the English Channel by the master-engraver Renard.<br/> <br/>The marine atlases of 17th and 18th century Holland were best sellers. The nation that led the world in overseas commerce also led in the arts of engraving and cartography. Plus there was a large audience of mariners and mariners' parents who needed to study the obscure straits and recently discovered island groups their sons were seeing. Louis Renard 1678-1746 was from a Huguenot family. He moved from France to the Netherlands and became a book dealer and publisher in Amsterdam in 1703. Louis Renard first published Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce qui se fait dans toutes les parties du monde in 1715. It was re-issued unchanged by the Ottens in 1739. The charts were printed from plates made by Frederick de Wit in 1675 Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas.
