Though Renan soon understood the limitations of science the premises he laid out in this book remained a foundation for his entire career. Renan emphasized the importance of knowing the historical origins of religion in order to develop a correct understanding of faith. This became a premise of modern theology and the historical and archaeological study of religious texts has become a significant field of theology in all religions.
