1891168820Paris: Imprimerie Nationale 1891. First fruits of Arabia First edition second issue with a cancel title page dated 1891 of this work originally published in 1884. This is the first publication in English of any account of Doughty's travels in Arabia predating Travels in Arabia Deserta by four years. The preface is in French by the semitic scholar Ernest Renan. In 1865 the German orientalist Theodor Nöldeke proposed that the Nabataean rock carvings in Jordan contained the origins of the Arabic script. For this hypothesis "Doughty's book remains an invaluable mine of source material. He had the advantages of a slow pace almost unlimited time an amazingly observant eye and perhaps most of all the compulsion to record without omissions every fact observed" Tabachnick p. 17. Doughty 1843-1926 arrived at Ma'an in May 1875 after a three-month camel journey through Sinai. There he heard of the Nabataean inscriptions at Mada'in Salih and nearby Hijr. Although neither the British Association nor the Royal Geographical Society was willing to provide financial support he spent a year studying Arabic and set out with the pilgrim caravan in 1876. He planned only a brief stay in the region but ended up wandering in Arabia for nearly two years: his adventures included a visit to Mohammed ibn Rashidthe ruler of northern Arabia a period of imprisonment by a Turkish commandant at Khaybar a series of dangerous episodes at Buraydah 'Unayzah and Mecca and a stay with the sharif of Mecca at Ta'if. A preliminary report in German of Doughty's observations appeared in the periodical Globus in 1881. Quarto 287 x 220 mm. With 54 plates mostly heliographs 9 folding 3 maps; text in French and English. Recent brown half calf to style flat spine ruled in gilt and blind black morocco label marbled boards top edge cut. Slightly scuffed mild damp stain at in the head margin affecting some leaves and plates throughout occasional toning of edges largely unopened. A very good copy. Macro 855. D. G. 1891DOUGHTYC015021Imprimerie Nationale Paris. 1891. First edition. Quarto. 308 pages. Six-page Introduction "Documents pigraphiques recueillis dans le Nord de l'Arabie par M. Charles Doughty" by Ernest Renan. Original blue wrappers printed label on spine.Contains "Note de. M. Doughty sur son Voyage" which despite the French title is in English 29 pages; also "Transcription et Traduction des Inscriptions Nabatennes de Medan-Salih in French and Hebrew 18 pages "Transcription des Notes contenues dans les Planches" in English 9 pages. 57 plates these being facsimiles of notes and drawings of rubbings which Doughty made from carved rock inscriptions maps and drawings 9 folding photogravures of inscriptions. The reason this was published in France was that Doughty had tried without success to sell the Nabatean inscriptions he had collected to the British Museum and the Royal Geographical Society. Meanwhile the French philologist Ernest Renan was in the process of preparing a work on Semitic inscriptions for the Academie des Inscriptions and offered Doughty the opportunity of publication. Renan later deciphered these using Doughty's transcriptions. A number of the plates in this book which are of superb quality were used for later editions of Arabia Deserta. The rest of the volume is devoted to E. Amlineau's "Notice sur le Papyrus Gnostique Bruce".Wrappers chipped and torn at edges. Spine cracked and discoloured. Apart from minor water-staining to the lower margins of four maps internally a bright and clean copy. Very good. Very scarce. Imprimerie Nationale, Paris. unknown
lom-MS001834In Russian. Short description: E. Renan translated by Varshavsky The Life of Jesus St. Petersburg 1906. Renan Joseph Ernest 1823-1892 a philosopher-positivist historian and writer. He is known as the author of a series of books on the history of early Christianity Semitic studies and philosophical dramas. ""The Life of Jesus"" is Renan's most famous work which enjoyed enormous success among readers and was repeatedly reissued in various countries. Ernest Renan was deprived of his professorship for nine years due to the publication of the book ""The Life of Jesus."" In this book he used a new method of synthesis of historical and literary sources. He was one of the first to investigate the New Testament as a historical source and compare the events described in it with other historical testimonies becoming one of the central figures in the critical school of biblical studies. The biography of Jesus Christ soon after its publication in 1863 gained worldwide fame. The author seeks to purify the gospel narrative from the supernatural elements and portrays his hero as a real preacher a religious anarchist. The Life of Jesus cannot be called a scientific study in the strict sense; it is more like a form of belles-lettres where historically accurate testimonies intertwine with the author's subjectivity in assessments and arbitrary reconstructions of many events.
