190618713London: Arthur L. Humphreys. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1906. Hardcover. First published in French in 1863 La Vie de Jesus it was soon translated into English. It remains Renan's best known work and he attempted to humanize Jesus to make him more understandable. Renan's writings angerd some but also appealed to others and his works were read by many literary figures of the day. The title page is printed in red and black lettering. Thecontents are clear and bright printed on quality paper with extra wide margins; no interior or external markings. The top edge is gilt and the other edges are deckled. There is previous owner's bookplate inside the front cover. This copy is finely bound in dark blue leather with gilt cover rules raised bands and ruled compartments. The XXX is also covered with gilt decorations. The blue spine is sun faded and a strip along the top rear cover is also faded. The binding however has a serious flaw: the front outer joint is broken and the front cover is detached; the rear outer joint is also very weak. These flaws can be repaired.
