Le Trésor des contes est un recueil de près d'un millier de contes collectés en Auvergne par Henri Pourrat mis en forme et publiés en treize volumes entre 1948 et 1962 - les derniers posthumes. C'est d'abord avec l'aide de l'ethnologue Arnold van Gennep que Pourrat recueille à partir de 1911 tout ce que l'on veut bien lui conter dans un cercle autour d'Ambert jusque dans les Monts du Forez et dans les fermes maisons et hameaux isolés du Livradois où il se rend chaque après-midi. Le but de cet infatigable randonneur : partir à la rencontre des derniers détenteurs de ce précieux savoir populaire : les contes de fées de sorcières d'horreur de brigands facéties et de miracles avec comme maître mot la nature et son respect. Interrogé sur sa méthode Pourrat dit : « Pour les contes. suffit-il seulement de les recueillir ce qui n'est déjà pas facile Neuf fois sur dix ils sont racontés platement. Lui-même le conseillait : Il faut que la transcription redevienne une création. La suprême fidélité comment la nommer autrement qu'art ou poésie Et il écrit encore : Impossible de ne pas toucher à ces contes : donnés tels quels sans sel ni sauge ils restent curiosités de spécialistes. Et impossible d'y toucher : ils ne sont pas tiens ce sont des classiques de la paysannerie. Pour qu'ils se fassent leur destin il s'agit de leur rendre sève.
