Original wrappers bound in original spine wrapper bound in at rear. Exterior hinges and edges rubbed. Interior clean.

Drawings by Madeleine Lemaire with scores by Reynaldo Hahn and a preface by Anatole France. The first book by the still unknown 25-year-old author a collection of prose poems and short stories. The book’s luxurious format and high price caused poor sales and as of 1918 the publisher Gaston Calmann-Lévy wrote to Proust that 1100 copies of the print run of 1500 copies remained unsold. Despite the financial issues the collection already bears the seeds of Proust’s unmistakable style which would of course come to full flower in À la Recherche du Temps Perdu whose first volume would not be published until seventeen years later. 1801309711801. Allg. Journ. Chemie 7/41. - Berlin Heinrich Frölich 1801 8° pp.503-604 1 l Kupferstichtafel orig. Broschur; unbeschnittenes Exemplar in der sehr seltenen orig. Broschur. Joseph Louis Proust's 1754-1826 historical importance derives primarily from his abilities as an analyst: his development of the use of hydrogen sulfide as an analytical reagent; his use of quantitative methods-consistently giving the results of his analyses in terms pf percentage weight composition and sometimes for oxides and sulfides of the same metal the weight of oxygen or sulfur in comparsion with a constant weight of the metal without however drawing any conclusion from the results-and most significant his enunciation of the law of definitie proportions. He investigated the varieties of sugar that occur in sweet vegetable juices distinguishing three kinds and he showed that the sugar in grapes of which he announced the existence to his classes at Madrid is identical with that obtained from honey by the Russian chemist J. T. Lowitz.Proust is famous for his work on the steadiness of composition of chemical compounds."In chemistry the law of definite proportions sometimes called Proust's Law states that a chemical compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass. An equivalent statement is the law of constant composition which states that all samples of a given chemical compound have the same elemental composition. For example oxygen makes up 8/9 of the mass of any sample of pure water while hydrogen makes up the remaining 1/9 of the mass. Along with the law of multiple proportions the law of definite proportions forms the basis of stoichiometry."Wikipedia. unknown
