Jahrhundert wurde das Thema des aufopfernden Todes für den rechten Glauben in einigen Dramen auf die Bühne gebracht. Diese frühneuzeitlichen Märtyrerdramen bedienten sich der theatralen Mittel des vorreformatorischen Spiels sowie einzelner Elemente des modernen humanistisch geprägten Dramas. -- In einer kleinen Reihe werden acht dieser Dramen, die sich vorwiegend in den Beständen der Herzog August Bibliothek befinden, als kritische Edition mit Kommentar präsentiert. Jedem Drama ist eine kurze Einführung zum Kontext vorangestellt.
