019897Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Thin catalogue with black & white photo of Rothstein with a sculpture tipped onto front cover. There is a short biography followed by some reviews a brief introduction by Curt Sachs and 10 of her works. As the date of the last review is 1944 and there is no publishing information this seems to be quite an early catalog for this artist born in 1906. The catalogue is lightly worn and soiled and has 3 holes punched as if it was meant to be in a binder. A nice copy none the less of an uncommon work. Irma Rothstein of New York/Russia. Rothstein 1906-1971 was known for her sculpture and figures. Her sculptures often featured expressive heads and torsos of women. Rothstein's well-known busts include George Bernard Shaw Ernest Hemingway and the conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos. 0 Paperback

2022BIBHB0070220212022. Hardcover. New. About the Book:-It is an exciting story how music has for thousands of years been held in balance between the basic facts that on the one hand sound is vibration of matter ruled by mathematical ratios and that on the other hand musical art works are immaterial indeed irrational. In studying this first attempt at a synthesis the reader should not forget that this book treats the rise of music in the ancient world and consequently in little concerned with the practice the conceptions and the misconceptions of medieval and modern Oriental music except in so far as they throw light on antiquity. Nor should he forget at what disadvantage such an attempt is placed by the incompleteness of our sources both musical and extramusical. About the Author:-Curt Sachs 1881 1959 was a German musicologist. He was one of the founders of modern organology the study of musical instruments. Among his contributions was the HornbostelSachs system which he created with Erich von Hornbostel. Born in Berlin Sachs studied piano music theory and composition as a youth in that city. However his doctorate from Berlin University where he was later professor of musicology in 1904 was on the history of art with his thesis on the sculpture of Verrocchio. He began a career as an art historian but promptly became more devoted to music eventually being appointed director of the Staatliche Instrumentensammlung a large collection of musical instruments. He reorganised and restored much of the collection and his career as an organologist began. His numerous books include works on rhythm dance and musical instruments with his The History of Musical Instruments 1940 a comprehensive survey of musical instruments worldwide throughout history seen as one of the most important. The long relationship he had with W. W. Norton & Company began with The Rise of Music in the Ancient World 1943. Although these works have been superseded by more recent research in some respects they are still seen as essential texts in the field. The Title 'The RISE of MUSIC in the ANCIENT WORLD: East and West written/authored/edited by CURT SACHS' published in the year 2022. 431163WW Norton & Company Inc. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This book is the most comprehensive history to appear before the public of the art which has been so fundamental an expression in every period of human history. It contains a discussion of the general types and characteristics of the dance and also deals specifically with its forms and symbols from the Stone Age through classical antiquity the middle ages the 18th century and the not so distant era of the waltz and polka to the 20th century. More inclusive than any other art the dance has been associated with every phase of human life. In relation to their historical setting the author deals with the magic powers attributed to the dance and such motives as fertility war marriage and health. We read that the Indian divorces his wife in the dance and when he is ill dances to dispel the disease; and that once in front of the Turkish soldiers sixty Greek mothers and girls danced the old Romaiika as they threw themselves one after another into the abyss. The book includes analyses of many forms of the art--sitting dances dances of the hands solo group and couple dances--and a discussion of rhythm and melody in relation to the dance. But it is not only because of its informative character that the book is distinguished. World History of the Dance written with rare force and insight communicates a feeling for its subject such as is seldom found in works of historical research. It is the author's understanding of the essence of the art its exhilaration and power to break down the distinctions of ordinary life that makes his book so rich a contribution to the knowledge and appreciation of the dance. Some damage to dustjacket nicely embossed boards are in good condition some foxing WW Norton & Company Inc hardcover
