Fine in full dark green leather covered boards with two raised bands on the spine with gilt text and decorations in the compartments and with gilt text and an outline of Cyrano on the front board and with a gilt outline of Cyrano's back on the rear board. The end sheets are silk and there is a matching silk placement ribbon sewn-in at the head of the spine. A small quarto measuring 10 1/2" by 6 3/4". Laid-in is the publisher's four page "Notes From the Archives". 210 pages of text. A new "English version by Louis Untermeyer with illustrations by Pierre Brissanud. London: William Heinemann 1898. 12mo. two-toned green cloth. First English Edition. Boldly signed by American actor Otis Skinner in pencil on the front endpaper and dated 1898. Skinner 1858-1942 was a leading actor of his day and although he played roles in various French dramas he never played Cyrano. An uncommon book and the basis for two movies: the 1950 version starring Jose Ferrer and the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won an Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano and the 1990 movie received five nominations including ones for Depardieu and for Best Foreign Film.
