Skinner 1858-1942 was a leading actor of his day and although he played roles in various French dramas he never played Cyrano. An uncommon book and the basis for two movies: the 1950 version starring Jose Ferrer and the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won an Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano and the 1990 movie received five nominations including ones for Depardieu and for Best Foreign Film. Very Good spine darkened. $875.00. 1898004085Boston New York London: Lamson Wolffe and Company 1898. French playwright Edmond Rostand 1868-1918 was a neo-Romantic in an age discovering realism. His "Cyrano" based upon a real-life figure of the 16th Century was first performed in 1897. Immensely popular it has had constant theatrical revivals and has inspired several motion pictures. English versions by different translators Hall Guillemand came out immediately. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of the First Edition with the translation done by Howard Thayer Kingsbury This is the version "Accepted and Played" by the great actor-manager Richard Mansfield 1857-1907 in his 1898 production at the Garden Theatre in New York. A scarce title particularly so when in collectible condition. Red cloth binding with silver lettering and fleuer-de-lis decorations on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 241 pages with a frontis portrait of Mansfield made up to play Cyrano. There is a penciled signature on the FFEP. The spine has faded to a sort of pink unfortunately common when sun encounters red ink but the silver is still bright. This is the only condition issue; a lovely book. First American Edition. With author & title credits in highly decorative gold lettering on the upper cover above an illustrated black stamped image of Cyrano gazing upward: author title and publisher credit across the backstrip teg. fore-edge uncut. With 9 black & white plates. In a sound binding with extremities only very lightly rubbed. A very nice copy. Rare. Cyrano was first published 1898 by Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle in Paris. In the United States it was published first in French in the same year by the William R. Jenkins Company & then in a much more broadly distributed English version by the firm of Doubleday McClure which is most often called erroneously the first US edition. In the same year Heinemann published the 1st UK edition. Both English language editions are preceded by the sparse Jenkins French printing; the French American copies being very far outnumbered by the later English language ones. This is the true First American Printing of Cyrano in the very nice decorated original binding. Rostand's highlight & basis for two screen efforts; The Jose Ferrer 1950's original & the 1990 remake starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won Best Actor Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano. A Near Fine or better spine slightly faded though silver remains bright and darkened page edges. Very scarce particularly in this condition. Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28 1897 and first translated into English by Kingsbury for Lamson Wolffe the same year. Mansfield was the first actor to play Cyrano in the United States in an English translation. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-1655 Rostand’s favorite writer. "Yet the character as portrayed by Rostand – with his excessively-enlarged nose his almost super-human duelling skills and his ability to improvise eloquent poetic speeches – is far from an exact portrait of the real-life Cyrano of the seventeenth century. . . . Possessed of a keen intellect with an insatiable appetite for reading and for learning he constantly experiments with when he is not challenging outright the established social scientific political and religious ideas of his day. With Eugen Zabel's book plate to inside of front board a postcard depicting Edmond Rostand's residense at Cambo obviously posttamped on verso pasted on to front free end-paper contemporary newspaper-clipping about the numerous performances of "Cyrano von Bergerac" around the world pasted in to hinge of fly-leaf where the presentation-inscription for Eugène Zabel is written and finally the original handwritten address in Rostand's hand cut out from the envelope in which the book was sent to Zabel is pased into hinge of half-title. Internally nice and clean. <br/><br/><em>First edition 136th thousand same year as the first presentation-copy "à M. Eugène Zabel/ très cordial envoi -/ remerciement -/ et sympathie./ Edmond Rostand/ Octobre 98" of Rostand's masterpiece which against all odds became one of the most popular plays of the century and an overnight success throughout Europe.At the end of the 19th century in France as well as in the rest of Europe the industrialization was the force that dominated almost all aspects of society i.e. everything from politics and sociology to science art philosophy etc. And thus also literature and theatre in this period were products of this new power. This meant that the trend that became prevailing within literature and drama was that of realism which in France soon developed into naturalism. In the midst of this all-encompassing emphasis on objective documentation of everyday life which rejected romance idealization and dreaming of any kind emerged suddenly a work that no one could believe would have any success whatsoever but which against all odds became the hugest dramaturgical success of the period and a theatrical monument that has been remembered ever since and which still stands as thus: Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac" the unlikely play about romantic heroes fairy-tale like maidens medieval-inspired sword-fights about poetry love and art. The play had been taken on already in 1897 when the manuscript was finished but the directors of the theatre regretted their decision immediately not least due to the public reaction to the "outdated" romantic comedy-drama which nobody would want to go see and thus they severely cut the budget so that Rostand had to pay for all the costumes himself. Even the actor playing the main part a leading actor at the time regretted having taken the part and Rostand is reported to have apologized to him for involving him in this "disastrous adventure". "Therefore when the curtain rose on "Cyrano de Bergerac" for the first time on December 28 1897 expectations were low. The audience however was about to be pleasantly surprised. From the hero's last first majestic entrance to his last farewell he transfixed his viewers. Theatergoers cheered Cyrano's triumphs sighed at his suffering laughed at his witty wordplay and cried as his fate became known. A full hour after the curtain fell the audience was still applauding thunderously. It is not easy to explain why Rostand's play confounded everyone by becoming one of the century's greatest smash hits. Perhaps the answer lies in "Cyrano de Bergerac's" stark contrast to the grimly realistic plays of its day which often focused on modern society's darkest problems. The figure of the swashbuckling Cyrano dueling his way across the stage and stunning his compatriots with his verbal cleverness took Paris by storm. In fact many critics both of Rostand's time and later attributed the play's tremendous success to its romanticism or emphasis on idealism and heroism." He was born in Königsberg in 1851 and died in Berlin in 1925. In his youth he wrote poems and after his move to Berlin he worked as a journalist critic and writer. He did a lot of work on Russian themes both political historical topographical and literary and he became closely connected to the country. He was highly respected for his liiterary criticism and his opinions though often controversial played an important role in public opiniation. </em> hardcover
